| caithnessfan's Full Review: General Electric JES1851 1100 Watts Microwave Oven |
I have had my GE JES1851 counter top microwave for about 3 and a half years now and so far have been EXTREMELY pleased with it's performance and features.
The utilitarian appearance (mine is black but it comes in white as well) is standard for most microwaves of today, a metal box with a glass front.
I fell in love with this machine at first sight after looking at several other microwaves available in the store. The thing that first drew my eye was that it was advertised as having a sensor which made it "smarter" . The JES1851 has a sensor in the cooking compartment that measures amount and temperature of steam coming from whatever you put inside and can tell in most cases exactly how long it needs to run and at what power.
It has buttons for 1 push heating of veggies, beverages, popcorn, re-heating, defrosting and baked potatoes that are GREAT. No more hovering by the micro, waiting for the bag of popcorn to stop popping, no more singed or burnt popcorn, and no more dry overcooked leftovers (unless they started out that way).
The inside is mostly flat easy to clean surfaces with a small area inside with holes for venting. I've had no problems cleaning it out after a messy re-heat or extra buttery popcorn splatter using just a moist sponge or a paper towel. The time cook option and power settings are easy to use as well and have step by step read outs that help with the power settings.
This model is 1.8 cubic feet, 1100 watts, all flush push button, and runs like a champ.
This is a great appliance for college students (if there's room in the dorm room for it) and just about anyone else who are trying to do several things at once or are on the go a lot and don't have the time to wait by the microwave for the popcorn to stop or the leftovers to be just right, or the frozen food to be thawed without being partially cooked or dried out in the process.
The only draw backs to this model are that it's dimensions are a bit large for narrow or crowded counter tops (12 5/16 x 23 21/32 x 18 inches), and the turn table will sometimes be a little halting or jerky in it's rotations.
As for price, it was comparable to other brand names of the same size and power. It was $30 less than the same features and sized PANASONIC unit that I looked at in the store. These were the only two that offered the sensor feature however they were still comparably priced just in the 15-20 dollar range above standard featured ones without the sensor feature.
Since I bought mine, prices have most likely come down a bit but this is still a SOLID performer and a great all around life saver for the student or worker bee on the go.
