Over a year ago now, we moved into our new home and purchased several new appliances as our previous home was sold with many of our older ones included in the selling price. In addition to purchasing a new washing machine, dryer, and refrigerator when we moved, we also needed a new microwave as well since our old model was one of those "over the range" space saving types and we were not taking it with us. So off to our local Wal-Mart we went in search of a new microwave. And our final choice was the Emerson 1.1 Cubic Foot 1000 Watt Microwave Oven . A bit smaller in size than average so that it would take up minimal precious counter space and moderately priced at approximately $90 plus tax, we left the store confident that we'd made the best choice for our family's microwaving needs. For several years prior, we had owned an older Emerson microwave that is actually still in use today inside my mother-in-law's home almost 15 years after we received it as a Christmas gift the first year we were married. And in the 15 months we have owned our newest choice, we've enjoyed cooking with our new Emerson 1.1 Cubic Foot 1000 Watt Microwave Oven with a one year limited warranty and have had no problems whatsoever as far as performance and reliability goes since.
~~~The Microwave Oven~~~
The Emerson 1.1 Cubic Foot 1000 Watt Microwave Oven is a standard sized microwave (21 inches wide, 11 inches tall, and 14 inches deep) that is white in color, 32 pounds in weight, and features computerized touchpad controls including digital clock and cooking options section. This Emerson microwave contains the Omni Wave Cooking System, which is a new technology from this company that allows food to cook evenly and quickly by emitting microwaves to all sides of the food. This dual wave system distributes waves evenly into the inside cavity from two points, one above the food item and one from below. Microwaves are emitted onto a reflector, which concentrates these waves onto the food, resulting in more even cooking with no more hot or cold spots after cooking. The glass cooking tray is constructed of special heat resistant glass that turns automatically on the plastic roller guide when food is being cooked.
The oven cavity inside is medium sized (14 inches wide, 8.5 inches tall, and 14 inches deep) and the safety interlock system prevents the oven from operating while the door is opened. Press the door release button firmly to open, and when the door latch is closed it will automatically lock shut. The splatter shield protects the microwave outlet itself from splashes when food is cooking and the door screen section allows viewing of food during the cooking process, which is designed to allow light to pass through but not the microwaves. And finally, the door seal on the Emerson 1.1 Cubic Foot 1000 Watt Microwave Oven maintains the microwave within the oven cavity and prevents any leakage of waves.
~~~Cooking Features~~~
To the right of the oven cavity found on the Emerson 1.1 Cubic Foot 1000 Watt Microwave Oven is the computerized touchpad controls used to operate this appliance. The number pads are used to set both the cooking and present time as needed. At the top is the digital display, which displays the cooking time, power level, indicators, and present time. To quick cook, simply press this button and then the desired reheat time and your food will be warm in no time at all. The one touch sections (used for popcorn, soup, beverages, muffins, frozen pizza, baked potatoes, dinner plates, and fresh vegetables) are used to cook or reheat specific quantities of certain foods. Press the more/less button to add or subtract cooking time as needed and the timer may be set for any amount of time up to 59 minutes and 99 seconds. The auto/defrost feature is used to defrost foods (see owners manual for specific defrosting times for different foods) and the power button sets the power level (0 through 9 and then HI power, or 0% to 100% power in increments of 10). Use the clock/auto start feature to set the clock as well as set a delayed auto start as desired. Use the stop/clear button to stop the oven while cooking or to delete cooking data and press start located at the bottom right section of the Emerson 1.1 Cubic Foot 1000 Watt Microwave Oven when you are ready to begin cooking.
~~~Our Experience~~~
While many people use their microwaves to cook lots of different dishes from scratch, I mainly use my Emerson 1.1 Cubic Foot 1000 Watt Microwave Oven to heat and reheat foods as well and cook popcorn several times a week so this model more than adequately meets our current cooking needs. I use it to warm up many different convenience foods, such as soups and other canned items, as well as reheat leftovers for a quick snack. And of course since my family loves popcorn, all we have to do is press the popcorn button and then start, and we have freshly popped microwave popcorn in only 2 minutes and 10 seconds. I must say that we rarely use some of the features, such as the auto defrost but I'm glad its there for infrequent use nonetheless. One thousand watts seems to be more than enough power for our limited microwave needs and our food comes out thoroughly yet evenly cooked every time. Cleaning the oven cavity is a breeze, but I usually cover my food with a paper towel or paper plate to prevent splatters during the cooking process to prevent large messes. The noise level during the cooking phase is average, and this microwave will beep three times when the timer gets to zero to alert you that your food is ready. While this model does take up a moderate amount of counter space since I was quite spoiled by having an over-the-stove microwave at our old house, I've been quite happy with how easy my Emerson 1.1 Cubic Foot 1000 Watt Microwave Oven is to use and how fast it warms up our food. It most certainly gets daily use in our home and still looks brand new.
~~~Overall Recommendation~~~
If you are looking for a basic microwave oven that cooks or reheats food fast and is average in size yet moderate in price, then the Emerson 1.1 Cubic Foot 1000 Watt Microwave Oven is certainly worth a serious look. Available wherever Emerson products are sold, such as Wal-Mart and other large department and discount stores, this handy model is reliable, attractive in appearance, and most of all, very simple to use. Those that do alot of actual cooking verses reheating in a microwave oven may want to look elsewhere at a larger more expensive model, but for everyday use this one provides reliable performance with little maintenance required. Just remember to read the owner's manual carefully and use microwave safe dishes and materials only or disastrous results may occur! Once again, I am a very satisfied customer and plan on using my Emerson 1.1 Cubic Foot 1000 Watt Microwave Oven for many years to come!
