Intro
From the maker's of NFL Gameday comes 5 0n 5 Football, with no rules, penalties, or out-bounds. This "no rules" mentality adds a spark to the overall gameplay. Hey wait, doesn't this sound familiar? Anyone remember a game called NFL Blitz?
The Old, New Gameplay of NFLX 8/10
I was partially disappointed when I bought NFLX because it was a total remake of NFL Blitz. It was an overall good game, but it had already been made.
When you pop NFLX into your playstation, it will act like other games, and start up. (Wow, so amazing) After you get into the menu, you have 5 choices, to start an exhibition, a season, to continue your old season, to start new playoffs, or to continue your old playoffs.
Starting a plain, old exhibition
An exhibition is a game in where you can play your friends, or go against the computer, with no pressure of winning or losing. It's simple enough to call this "Starting a Game."
Starting a new season
When starting a season, you pick a team to play a whole season with. You go up all the way, to see whom can become champion, and win the Super Bowl. In season mode, you sadly cannot play 2 player. (Who cares, there's always Exhibition)
Continuing your old season
To load, or continue your old season, you click on it and wait for your memory card to load. As soon as it's done, you have your old season, to keep on adding to.
Start the playoffs
The playoffs, simply, is a shorter edition of the season. In the season, 12 teams make it to the playoffs, but only one is the champ. In playoff mode, you are one of the 12 teams fighting for the championship.
Loading your old playoffs
Loading your old playoffs is simply explained. You access your memory card, and load your playoffs that are already in progress. Very simple indeed, pretty self-explanatory actually.
The low, low Price
The price has dropped dramatically in the past few years because of how old NFLX is. This just makes a good game, even cheaper. I'd say you could find it at your local Target for $10 - $15.
Graphics 6/10
Well, when NFLX came out in '98, the graphics were amazing, but in the past few years, they've decreased dramatically. I quote from the back of the CD "...state of the art player model recreates the real NFL player unprecedented, 3D detail. "Hardly! When playing the game, all of the figures are 3D, but are made entirely of detailed blocks. I guess there ok for 4 years old.
Framerate 9/10
The framerate is very smooth, besides the harsh, fast gameplay. It's no surprise that it's fast, because the players are constructed of blocks. But still, the graphics never lag nor blur together.
Sound 9/10
The sound is incredible, compared to the blocky graphics. There isn't any main music in the game, besides the commentary. The commentary is richly done by an unknown being, that provides the play-by-play comments. He really isn't unknown, just an imaginary guy. The sound cuts it close, 9/10!
The very Basic Controls 10/10
I really like the controls in NFLX because they're so simple.
This guide will step you through the main basic controls of offense and defense.
Offense
The offensive controls are probably a little easier then the defensive ones.
QB sneak = () Square
High Stepping = (X)
Spin and Juke = (O) Circle
Jump Catch = Triangle
Stiff Arm = L1 or R1
Turbo - Hold L2 or R2
Call Audible = L2 or R2 + (), (X), or (O) before the snap.
Defense
The defensive controls are a little more complex, and take a little bit to learn. You'll get used to it.
Dive Tackle = ()
Switch to closet defender to the play = (O)
Jump interception = (Triangle)
Turbo = Hold L2 or R2
Swim Move = L1 or R1
Call Audible = L2 or R2 + (), (X), or (O) before the snap.
The big, bone-crushing late hits
Late hits are a crucial part of a no rules, 5-on-5 football game. To late hit an opponent, tap () and L2.
Overall 42/50
All in all, NFL Xtreme is a great game, but I think it's already been made famous by NFL Blitz, but it's worth a try. I recommend it for it's no rules mentality, easy controls, and long replay value.
