Enzian's Full Review: Banjo Kazzoie for Nintendo 64
Looking at the rack of N64 games, Banjo-Kazooie may seem like another kiddie game. Underneath the luxurious graphics (truly amazing), though, lies one tough game.
Disclaimer: I am of average gaming mettle: maybe slightly sub-par, according to my 19 yr old brother.
My first two weeks of the game were spent aimlessly walking around the first real level (not the tutorial). I went out to Elec. Boutique and picked up the cheat book published by Prima. After that, I spent my days at work pining for the chance to have another crack at the level I was working on while the catchy, unobtrusive music flitted around my head. I had a great time playing this game.
Unfortunately, my lack of hand-eye coordination caused an 8 month stall in gameplay when I hit the next to the last level. I got sick of the game, and, 8 mo. later, picked it up again, and continued advancing. I am still (1 yr, 4 mo)trying to beat the wicked witch (the last level)- a fact that continually "gets my goat". As of now, I'm still on an indefinite hiatus from gameplay.
With that said...
The graphics are truly amazing and completely immersing. After a couple of minutes of gameplay, I felt as if it were another world I had been allowed to view.
The sound is infectious, in a good way. The music will seep into your brain like water on a sponge - and you won't mind a bit. The sound effects are pleasing and appropriate.
As for the controls: There are quite a number of moves you must learn (lessons are painlessly taught through a tutorial level and encounters with Bottles, a sesei-esque mole) but, once you learn them, they are yours for life. Even after my months-long sabbaticals, I was still able to pick up a controller and go to town.
Overall, I love this game. It has provided me with hours of gameplay and more hours of wanting to play it. (Just writing this review makes me want to give 'ol Gruntilda another whack!) While I was playing this game I had so much fun I didn't want to sleep. Oh the joys are many... but thank Heavens for that indispensible cheat book.
