Pros: Fun, good for young children as well as older.
Cons: Graphics aren't the greatest but hey this game is for the old Gameboy.
The Bottom Line: I recommend this game for presents, this was my very first gameboy game one X-mas morning and I had never been so excited in all my life.
yragaras's Full Review: Pokemon Red for Game Boy Color
This is where, in my opinion, Pokemon began. Sure the show was first and maybe even the mangas but this game gave life to the craze. For the mothers out there who haven't a clue about this game, no offense, let me explain it. In Pokemon Red, and blue for that matter, the main character is a 13-year-old boy; he and his rival want to go on the greatest adventure into man-hood. After a quick stop with the professor he will give the player his very first pokemon, which is to an extent a pet with extraordinary powers. This quest is a mission to catch all 150 of these creatures, whether be through game play, special events, or even trading with a friend.
Pokemon are caught inside small handheld devices known as a pokeball, and no the balls do not harm the creatures. Each pokemon is either 1 or 2 out of 15 types, which determines their weakness and strength (ex: fire type is weak against water types but strong against grass types). The player uses his new friends, since you can hold up to 6 pokemon with you at a time, to battle other trainers.
In addition to catching the 150, the player also needs to take the gym leader challenge. This is a series of 8 pokemon gyms set up throughout the land of this game, although it isn't mentioned the land is named Kanto. Each gym has it's own based type, like the first gym for example is a rock gym so all the pokemon the trainer inside, including Brock the gym leader, use rock or ground meaning that if the player uses their water or grass type pokemon they will win for sure. Once you beat the gym leader, which the equivalent to a boss on other games you will be awarded a badge.
After collecting all 8 badges you will qualify to enter Victory Road. This path takes you down the road filled with the games strongest trainers and also leads you to the Elite Four. The Elite Four are the 4 strongest trainers in the game who have a level far surpassed that of a gym leader. This 4 have to beaten in a row with no rests. Which I should have mentioned earlier, when your Pokemon are low of health you can take them to the Pokemon Center to heal them.
This game is great for young children, assuming they can read. It may not have the best of graphics, but it is a good game nonetheless. The violence rating on this game is really up to you to decide but in my opinion this game hasn't any violence. Sure two players may battle one another with creatures who have magical powers, but realistically it teaches children to find other ways to deal with problems other than actually hurting someone. So for all mothers who don't want there child playing games with guns or even swords this game is an A+ choice
Collect up to 139 Pokémon with this game both Red and Blue versions are required to capture all 150 use the optional Game Link cable to trade Pokî..More at Amazon Marketplace
