hamburgerman's Full Review: Crazy Taxi for Dreamcast
I first heard about the arcade CRAZY TAXI on a coin-op message board. When I found one in a local arcade, I fell in love with it. Then I heard CRAZY TAXI was one of the first titles that would be available for the Sega Dreamcast. I got a Dreamcast, and I pre-ordered copy of CRAZY TAXI online. Then I got it. Wow. Gameplay is almost identical to the arcade version (with the exception of the steering wheel.) Once you learn all the tricks, it is an absolute BLAST! The drivers have a great sense of humor, and the soundtrack rocks.
The Dreamcast version of CRAZY TAXI gives the player the arcade version of the game, plus an original cityscape that is unique to the home version. The player can choose arcade rules, started with a very limited amount of time, 50 seconds. In arcade mode, the player earns additional time as new customers are picked up. The Dreamcast CRAZY TAXI also offers three, five, and ten minute versions of the game, with no additional time given to the player. The new city allows the player to drive through train tunnels and on the subway track!
There are also several mini-games that can be played in the CRAZY BOX. At first, nine beat-the-clock games are playable, each requiring a specific skill from the driver. For example, the first mini-game, the CRAZY JUMP, requires the driver to master the CRAZY DASH manuever. These little games are quite fun, and range from 40 seconds to 2 minutes in time. As these first 9 mini-games are cleared, a total of seven more will appear. What is not mentioned in the instruction manual is that once all 16 CRAZY BOX games are completed, a new vehicle is offered.
There are several other hidden modes on Dreamcast's CRAZY TAXI that are not printed in the manual. They can be found on-line simply by search your favorite search engine for "+crazy +taxi +cheats" -- You can get the CRAZY BIKE without having to clear all the mini-games and you can change the player's point-of-view with these "cheats."
One important "cheat" is the ANOTHER DAY mode. Each game as-is starts in the exact same place. Depending on your level of expertise, this can make it difficult to see the entire city. If you successfully enter the code for ANOTHER DAY, you start the game in a new position, allowing you to see more of the game! These cheats contribute to CRAZY TAXI's replayability.
When you play, be sure to drive into the ocean so you can see the whale!
I give CRAZY TAXI 5 out of 5 stars, an A+. Superior gameplay.
