| pgr91's Full Review: American Express Platinum |
American Express Platinum cards cost a lot - $300 a year. I got mine for the Platinum Travel Service and the many Platinum Travel Benefits, such as airport club memberships, cruise priveleges, and international companion tickets. I have been sorely disappointed.
International companion tickets are mostly for business class only. AmEx advertising has gotten better and the web site is a little clearer than it used to be, but this is still hyped as a "first or business class" program. Read the fine print.
Cruise priveleges are worth $300/room in on board credit, plus welcoming champaign and a bridge tour with the captain - IF your agent remembers to book the platinum package. Mine didn't. AmEx and the Disney Cruise Line are still pointing fingers. Meanwhile, I'm out $600 on two rooms.
The limo service can connect you with a limo anywhere, any time. However, the price seemed pretty high, and a follow up call to the vendor confirmed I had paid TWICE their going rate. The premium is too steep. It's not that hard to find a limo service yourself.
And the Platinum Travel Service itself? Errors, mistakes, and careless inattention to detail. Booked in the wrong class of travel, name misspelled, requests forgotten (no limo, no insurance, no cruise priveleges...)
I may still save a lot of money on an international companion ticket. But so far, I've experienced incredibly poor service, and more hype than benefits.
