| satashi's Full Review: Francis Marion University |
I attended Francis Marion University in the mid nineties and left a few years later. I ended up transferring for other reasons. One thing that I would go on and on about, and even suggest that anyone see if they happen to be in that area, is the campus. The campus is beautiful and well groomed.
The food in the cafeteria is classic southern cuisine. If you eat it you will gain the Freshman 15 and or the Transfer 10. The cafe prices when I left were nuts but it is nice offering music, coffee of all kinds and flavors, cheesecake (which is fabulous) and other delicacies but daily lunch trips will cost you. The Turkey Club was one of my favorite sandwiches. You can choose the bread and it comes with bacon, chips and a pickle. When I left it cost $4.75 but prices have gone up since then.
While I attended I lived in the dorms and the on campus apartments and I have to say they are much nicer than the ones at South Carolina State University and Benedict College. The dorms share a bathroom but have two people in a room. The apartments are available for two people who share a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and furnished living area. There are also the cheaper four bedroom apartments. Since all of these share a single phone line a cell phone would be in your best interest.
There is wildlife on campus. Namely squirrels and a few possums and some other creatures. Do not fear most are harmless but for those of you like me that have never seen some of these things unless you ask you will not be told.
Unlike some colleges and universities most if not all of the buildings have air conditioning which is a good thing because it gets hot in the summer (hey it's the south!) and stays warm for most of the school year. When noon hits and you are inside you will be thankful.
A good proportion of students have a tendency to leave on the weekends or holidays, mainly because most who attend FMU (as it is known) live in the state and the campus has a deserted feel during these times. FMU does not have a football team but it does have many sports available for girls and guys. I had a few friends while I attended that were really into soccer and basketball. There are scholarships available for those who are talented in these areas.
The library is one of the best in the area (for those of you who care). Anything that you need can be found or loaned in from anywhere. Since some professors have a tendency to put things on reserve it would be in anyone's best interest to make the library staff your friend and become familiar with where the Circulation desk is.
The professors were helpful to me but if you aren't interested in what is being taught most don't try to motivate you. They are paid to teach and that is what they do. Most are pretty helpful when you are having problems. One gripe that I did have came from Freshman Seminar, it is a class which helps you get familiar with the campus but the class is dumb. When I came in it wasn't required but before I left it was.
Tuition for a full time semester when I left was under $4,000. For an out of state student the price goes up about $300 but compared to other colleges won't break the bank and the education is quality. Whether or not this is the college for you depends on what your major is. I would suggest this school for education majors who are in the majority and psychology majors.
For all that I may have left out please check out the website http://www.fmarion.edu/.
