| Susie-34668's Full Review: Verizon Online DSL (Eastern US) |
Len and I have been with Peoplepc.com for years. We did the package with them, receiving a computer and the internet dial-up service for $24.95 a month. After 3 years the computer was fully paid. I went on to paying a yearly fee for the service.
A couple of our friends were using Verizon DSL and saying how good the service was. Len and I spent several months before we decided to give it a try.
Firstly we checked out the web-site and they offered the modem for free, just pay the S & H charges of $12.95. The first month free, 2nd and 3rd month $29.95, and then $34.95 a month. We were still not a hundred percent sure, so headed up to Verizon in our local Mall. Len went over everything with one of the guys. He told us we needed to buy a router, as we have 2 computers, and they were cheaper in Best Buy. So off we went to Best Buy to take a look. Well, they also had wireless ones too, so which did we need.
Our friend, who builds computers, told us to go ahead and sign up with Verizon, and he would provide all the equipment we needed. Even told us that by going wireless, I could have my laptop on-line too.
I was working, so Len headed up to Verizon, he double checked that we could have the internet price, as he would be signing in the store. Not only did the representative say "Yes", but he also gave Len his card. We were told it would take up to 5 working days to received the modem.
We received an e-mail notification that we could start using the Verizon DSL, the only problem the modem hadn't arrived. Well, the next evening (Thursday) it came via UPS. Our friend came out to set everything up for us on the Friday evening. He was here for several hours, doing a job that should have taken 20 minutes, and couldn't get a connection. He put it down to a bad modem. After telephone Verizon, they informed us one would be out the next day. The customer support representatives were very helpful.
The next day being Saturday, it didn't come. We had to wait until the Monday evening for the delivery. Once we had a working modem, we were set. He installed the software and set up our DSL account. Our friend had linked up the 2 main computers and both worked great. He came back a few days later and set up my laptop as well.
We were both really pleased to have the connection at all times. We didn't realize how much time we had wasted dialing in, in the past. After clicking on favorites, I didn't have to twiddle my thumbs, waiting for the page to load. I can say it is almost instant.
The other wonderful bonus is, we were able to cancel call waiting, with Verizon. We had to have it, in connection with an Emerson box, so that no calls were missed while surfing the net. That saved us $5.50 a month.
So now we can have all three computers on the internet at the same time, and still have our only telephone line open for telephone calls. What a great system.
The service has been wonderful. Verizon have their own page and e-mail us from time to time. Both my husband and I are spending less time on our computers and achieving a lot more. I get to read, rate, and comment, on Epinions much faster. Sometimes I could wait forever for a page to load. Not the case anymore. Verizon have had no down time since we changed over.
We didn't have to sign an annual contract, which was a plus. Our first bill came in, and I found a couple of small errors. Firstly they had us starting with the DSL on April 16th, and it was the 19th. They did give us the 30 days free, but then pro-rated the 2nd month at $34.95. I called the billing department and informed them of the two errors. The first one was taken care of immediately. The second one was a problem. The young lady refused to give us the second and third months for the $29.95. I know that this is only 5 bucks a month, making a total of $10.00, but I believe in principals. After arguing with her for a long period of time, I asked to speak with a Manager or Supervisor. Again another long wait, on hold, then I got the most helpful person possible. She immediately gave us the deal we had been quoted, told me that it will take 2-3 bill cycles to show up. Because of this I asked for a confirmation number, which she gave me. It took me over an hour to achieve this feat, but I won. I will add to this review, at a later date, if I don't get my credit, and the $29.95 on the next months bill.
The credit for the 3 days and the $5 over charge came on my bill, in the mail yesterday. However, they have charged me $34.95 for the third month. Now do I really want to spend an hour on the phone, trying to retrieve five bucks? Oh Verizon, you have really let yourselves down on the billing side.
If you have more than one computer then I would really recommend this service. When Len's contract is up with peoplepc.com, we will save the $11.95 a month, we are paying for the fast dial up with them. I canceled mine, which was $12.95, and call waiting at $5.50, so we were paying out over $30 a month, and my laptop was not on-line. It may be a lot of money for one person, who only uses their computer occasionally. I would suggest they use peoplepc.com, for everyone else, give Verizon a try.
Thanks to all who read.
Susie.
