Pros: No floating bar needed; pop-up ads were unobtrusive; reliable service
Cons: From the letter I received, FreeAtLast.com shut down for good
The Bottom Line: The only reason I cannot recommend FreeAtLast.com is because the service no longer exists. If FreeAtLast.com's service existed, I would give it 5 Stars.

When I discovered the existence of Free Internet Service Providers a few years ago, NetZero was the "Big Man on Campus" so I signed up to use NetZero. It was OK at first, and I lived with the loss of screen real estate it needed. So that I had a back up ISP in case I could not use NetZero, I signed up for AltaVista's service which was powered by 1stUp. Along the way the NetZero software kept causing my system to crash, and I had trouble connecting with AltaVista by 1stUp; for those reasons I searched for alternate FREE ISPs. For a while I used FreeInternet.com (also known as Free-I.net, it's earlier name); FreeInternet.com's saving grace fro me was the chat facilities it offered, and if it weren't for FreeInternet.com's chat facilities I would have dropped the service soon after signing up.
While I was searching for better Free Internet Service Providers I found FreeAtLast.com. Compared to the other Free ISPs I had used (including a few others whose names I forget at the moment), FreeAtLast was understated in its appearance. FreeAtLast.com service did not require a toolbar as NetZero and AltaVista by 1stUp did-- and it certainly did not use a full-blown browser window as FreeInternet.com did. Whatever ads FreeAtLast wanted me to see appeared as appropriately sized pop-up windows which I could close at any time. FreeAtLast.com never caused my system to crash, and rarely did FreeAtLast give me any dial-up problems. FreeAtLast.com's e-mail services were superior to those of other Free ISPs I had used.
FreeAtLast.com was the best of the Free ISPs I had used. When I received a message stating that it would suspend its operations, I was saddened by the loss of what was to me a reliable service. While finding other ISPs to use I didn't find anything else I liked, and NetZero was worse-behaved than ever.AT&T WorldNet Service was great, but it doesn't serve my area. Currently I use Juno's $9.95/month plan because I didn't want to use the Web at 4:00am every day. If I find another Free Internet Service Provider I like I will sign up. Until then, the standard had been set by FreeAtLast.com.
