...
' Comedy Thesaurus' ...what the heck is that..? Do we really need a 'funny thesaurus'..?? That sounds dangerous. '
Well ...it is dangerous. To your 'blues'. Flipping through the pages, following one laugh or smile to another, flipping to the back to check out a comedian, on to the next joke ...your fingers, your brain, your funny bone will all get a good workout.
Judy Brown has been the LA Weekly's comedy critic for a dozen years, a freelance writer over the last twenty. Her Comedy Thesaurus:... collects three thousand-plus "quips, quotes, and smartass remarks" from all fields of comedy: stand-up, TV, print, film, late-night-talk shows ...all refreshingly contemporary, edgy, and no-holds-barred.
This collection grew from her realization that most 'humorous quotation' books were dragging out "...the same tired one-liners from dead white males like Oscar Wilde and Mark Twain." While she was seeing stand-up comedians sharing topical humor every day...and not all were "Caucasians with a penis, ...most...still very much alive and quipping."
A brief introduction, less than two pages, credits Lenny Bruce with 'practically inventing' stand-up comedy. She praises Dick Gregory, Godfrey Cambridge, Bill Cosby, Phyllis Diller, Elayne Boosler, Roseanne Barr, Ellen DeGeneres, Margaret Cho and others for pushing the envelope of comedy to today's cutting edge.
From there it is straight into the comedy-pool. No waiting two hours after eating. A thesaurus is by one definition " a book containing lists of synonyms or related words." The Comedy Thesaurus follows that concept with major topics and sub-topics arranged alphabetically. Within each are 'quips, quotes, and smartass remarks' related to that topic or sub-topic.
An example, chosen randomly: SEX ...OK, it was not completely random, work with me on this...
Related Topics in the book are listed immediately:
Then to the sub-topics. The first two pages of SEX list many sub-topics:
" After Children, After Fight, Anal, Bad, Beautiful, Casual, Celibacy, Choice, Clowns, Compliments, Cuddling, Cybersex, and Death, Dirty,"
Each sub-topic contains one, two, some number of 'quips, quotes, or smartass remarks', each attributed to the source comedian.
For instance, the sub-topic Celibacy shares:
" I'm celibate and it ain't easy. I now know why Catholic nuns are so mean. I also want to hit people with a ruler for no apparent reason."
—René Hicks
No idea who she is..?? Check the About the Comics section at the back. Each comedian gets a brief sentence or two, explaining who they are, their experience, sometimes contact info. Hicks, for example, "...has starred in her own Comedy Central special, appeared in the movie Low Down Dirty Shame, and has been nominated for an American Comedy Award. Web site: www.renehicks.com. "
Comedy Thesaurus:... is obviously about much more than just 'Sex'. Birth, Breaking Up, Crime, Death, Environmentalism, Fashion, Gambling, Hair, Husbands, Marriage, Models, Parenthood, Phobias, Restaurants, Science, Sports, Stuff, ...just a few random Topics.
Topics in A, B, and C alone number near 80 with several hundred sub-topics and even more individual 'quips, quotes, and smartass remarks.' No, I am _not_ going to count to make sure there are the promised '3,241' entries. I have to draw the line somewhere..!!
All the legends are found in here, those you know by one name: Burns and Allen, Barr, Carlin, Dangerfield, Feldman and Feldman, Parr . . .and on and on. All the current funnymen and funnywomen appearing on the talk shows, on Comedy Central, at stand-up comedy clubs are also in here.
The Bottom Line
If you are looking for classic and cutting-edge slices of comedy there are plenty to be found in The Comedy Thesaurus: 3,241 Quips, Quotes, And Smartass Remarks. Believe me, any page will bring a funny thought and a sure laugh, matching your whim of the moment or satisfying a random need.
I highly recommend this one to bring a smile to your face and to your day.
