My husband and I were elated that we were going to have a baby. We had always know that we wanted to have children, and here we were, lucky enough to be blessed with our own little angel…then the reality of it hit - what now? The line was pink…the Doc agreed…it’s no joke; there’s really a baby in there!!
This book helped us walk our way through each week knowing a little more about what was going on with our daughter. We are both fascinating with learning new things so it was no surprise when we started asking all sorts of questions and reading everything we could get our hands on. Of all the books I read, this one was my favorite. I would suggest that if you do get this book, don’t let it be the only one you read on the topic of pregnancy. While it is a wonderful book with a lot of information, I had to further investigate some things and I was left with a few questions on occasion. Overall, I would recommend this book to any mother-to-be, even if you’ve all ready been through pregnancy once or twice before. It’s a great as a new mom resource, or a refresher course.
About the book:
“Your Pregnancy Week By Week” walks you through the whole course of pregnancy, from preparing to be pregnant, all the way to delivery. It is broken down into chapters based on the week of your pregnancy.
Because your due date is calculated by the first day of your last period, in most cases, the age of the fetus is actually 2 weeks younger than the week of pregnancy you are in, (generally.) Example – If I were in my 15th week of pregnancy, the fetus would actually be 13 weeks old. The book uses this to help you see the development, week by week, of the baby you are carrying. The chapters are titled by the week of pregnancy / age of fetus.
There is a drawing for each chapter that helps you see what the baby’s approximate growth is. Each chapter has information relevant to the particular stage of pregnancy. There are little tips throughout the book like, “ Tip for week 9 – It’s an old wives tale that your hair won’t curl if you have a permanent during pregnancy. My only precaution is that if odors affect you, the fumes from a permanent or hair coloring could make you feel ill.” Of course, some things, like this one, you should ask your doctor about, but most of them are interesting little insights or things to look for.
Each chapter has 6 sections –
~ How big is your baby?
~ How big are you?
~ How your baby is growing and developing
~ Changes in you
~ How your actions affect your baby’s development
~ You should also know
“Your Pregnancy Week by Week” is 370 pages long, and includes a glossary and an index so that you can follow along with the text more easily and find any topic discussed in the book. Glade B. Curtis, M.D., OB/GYN – the author – has also included a list of other books that may be helpful to you.
This book touches on everything you need to know when you are pregnant, and I feel that it is a great place to start to learn more about the changes that are happening in your body. The subjects range from how you feel when you get pregnant, to possible complications that can arise, and everything in between. I do suggest you keep a piece of paper and pen with you when reading because you are bound to have a few questions, and you should ask your doctor about them.
Things I liked best about this book:
I loved the fact that the chapters went by the week and so did the pictures. I felt like I was able to bond with my daughter every day before she was born. I checked the book every week to see about how big my little girl was getting, and I felt more in touch with her growth. I loved the fact that it explains how and when their little body develops. I got so excited when I was able to read around what age her fingernails started to grow, and when she was really able to hear my voice and things like that. This book was wonderful
Things that I did not like:
The only thing I can say that I did not like, was that some things were only touched on briefly and because of that, I didn’t think they were “serious” enough to look into further. For instance, I am Rh negative, and that is something that has to be watched very carefully. I had no idea that I should even ask my doctor about it, and the way it was briefly described, made me look over it as if it did not apply to me. I probably should have read it more carefully, but I think things could have been elaborated a little more. That is why I suggest other reading material that is more in depth.
All in all, I think this is a wonderful book to have in your pregnancy reference collection. It is informative and helps you watch the growth of your little one from day one. I highly recommend it, as long as it is not your only source of information.
