tommy_lop's Full Review: Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego
I have been hooked on Carmen Santiago games since I was a kid. Used to watch it on my local PBS channel when they still had it on (it might still be on in other areas). And this is a great game for all ages mainly because the average American knowledge of geography well is slightly below average(has in some people if you ask them where brizil is they say it is somewhere by china.)
You start out has a new recruit for Acme detective agency. Your job is to track down and arrests Carmen Santiago and her band of crooks. This won't be an easy job for you have to fly thorough exotic location and ask for 2 things where they went and what they looked like. Then go if you see two janitors or crooks getting away you went to the right place. Keep going like that till you catch it.
Good:
Teaches geography and the new version has an electronic encyclopedia in it so it is easy to research the crooks place. Plus in the newer versions you have the chief to give you some game advice and you can call a tour guide to the area. This is a plus cause in older Carmen Santiago games you add to read text and look it up in an encyclopedia book. Not to mention you call the guides back later to ask them if you have the right info on the suspects looks.
I have used this game to achieve a few bonus points in by geography class.( I only missed one and it was because the question was what city has the statue of the Christ on a nearby mountain the answer was re di nerjaro and I said Brasilia but by team was ready to say Jerusalem.)
Now for the bad.:
This game has one bad part and that is clues to repeat themselves after a while so at the higher levels memorization might help more then actual research.
New improvements
for those who have played the older Carmon Santiago games a few things have change. Number one being able to ask each person where did they go and what did they look like. In the original the person gave only one of those answers but then has far has knowing the looks you only had to have three instead of five pieces of data.
2. When you move in for the bust you have to go by what the warrant looks like if you nab the wrong person you fail the case.
3. This is the greatest improvement of all calling a tour guide not only to get some info about where you are at but you can call them back later and they will verify if your warrant is correct or not. For those of you have played past Carmen games know how frustrating it is to work thorough a case finally get there with only one or two moves left, arrest the criminal and let them get away because there warrant is wrong.
4.electronci encyclopedia that lets you search for key words. This better then going thorough the paper back encyclopedia that you had to go through in past games. All though there is a time penalty for using it.
All in all this is a good game to get if you need to improve on your geography.
