| shoplmart's Full Review: Turtle Wax Bug & Tar Remover |
After I take my car to the city or after driving it on a hot August night it's a given that my Neon's front bumper/grille is going to be a graveyard for bees, mosquitoes, moths, etc. If you are familiar with regular store brand car washes then you know that most of these products do very little in helping you remove those bugs that are encrusted on the front fascia of your car. Most of the time either a scrub brush or a product like Turtle Wax Bug & Tar Remover must be used in conjunction with some good elbow grease to achieve adequate results.
About the product:
Turtle Wax Bug & Tar Remover is not designed strictly for removal of bugs. On the contrary, Turtle Wax Bug & Tar remover can also be used to remove tar, oil, grime, road film, tree sap, paint spots, stains, and asphalt from your vehicle. Turtle Wax Bug & Tar Remover comes in a 16 FL. OZ. can; enough to treat the front bumper/grille of a small or mid-sized vehicle around 10+ times.
Turtle Wax's Claims:
Turtle Wax Bug & Tar Remover is safe for all types of painted surfaces (including clear coat), windows, and grilles. Turtle Wax claims that this product will make light work of removing tar and bugs from your vehicle. Since the product is safe for clear coat surfaces, you can also use Turtle Wax Bug & Tar Remover on other sections of your car i.e., your painted ground effects, spoilers, etc.
My Experience:
I have been using Turtle Wax Bug & Tar Remover for about 2 years now and have found that when using this product in conjunction with a good soap and sponge it makes removing bugs, road grime, and tar so much easier from my vehicle than when just using soap and elbow grease alone.
Other then for removing bugs from the front fascia of my Dodge Neon, I also use Turtle Wax Bug & Tar Remover to help remove road grime from the ground effects and other sections of my vehicle where those stubborn unwanted substances seem to always collect. When I first used Turtle Wax Bug & Tar Remover I was extremely concerned that this product might scratch the clear coat or the paint off my car; fortunately this has not happened when using this product on any section of my vehicle (the hood, doors, etc.). In-fact, the paint on my ground effects still looks fresh after over 20 treatments. So, does Turtle Wax Bug & Tar Remover actually work on removing tree sap? I have yet to find a safe product that does an adequate job removing the types of tree sap we have up here in Northern California; Turtle Wax Bug & Tar Remover unfortunately is not an exception.
Turtle Wax Bug & Tar Remover is a breeze to use, however there is a major catch here. The bottle is almost impossible to get open when using your bare hands. I have chipped a few nails trying to get into these bottles; the cap has to be pried open with a knife or utensil, so be prepared to use your imagination. It is my opinion that a car care product should be easy to access; it is hard enough washing a car with impeccable detail without having to worry about getting the cleaning products out of their bottles. Other than this major annoyance, about 1.5 Oz's of this product poured onto a damp wash cloth or sponge combined with a little bit of elbow grease is all that is needed for successful results.
Note: This product used to be available in an easy-to-use spray. If you can find the spray version I highly recommend it over the difficult to open non spray version.
Any warnings?
Turtle Wax does warn against using this product on hot surfaces or in the sun. Also, this product can be harmful or fatal if swallowed, so keep it away from children.
Price/Availability:
Turtle Wax Bug & Tar Remover can be purchased almost anyplace where automotive products are sold. Prices vary from $3.99 at grocery stores to about $2.99 at large discount stores i.e., Wal*Mart.
Final Thoughts:
If you are a car maintenance freak (like me) and have a problem removing bugs and tar from your vehicle then I definitely recommend purchasing this product. Even with my gripes, Turtle Wax Bug & Tar Remover has proved to be effective for removing bugs and tough road grime. I will continue to use Turtle Wax Bug & Tar Remover for my automobiles until I find a more effective product.
