Another cd single. And it's Britney. No surprises, I'm sure.
I was (pleasantly) surprised that Toxic was released as the second single. Why? I dunno. I think I expected (I Got That Boom Boom) to be next, based upon the amount of push it seemed to be getting from various media outlets.
Toxic is just the single that Britney needed to erase the mediocre-ness out of our minds that was left by Me Against The Music. The single, the video, and the various remixes are a treat to own. By the way, there are at least four different Toxic cd singles out on the market. At this moment, I only own one of them :).

Album Version
Album Mix Instrumental
Armand Van Helden Remix
Felix Da Housecat's Club Mix
Lenny Bertoldo Mix Show Edit
The album/radio release version is in high rotation on radio and MTV. Billboard shows that its crossing several different charts including Top 40, Hot Dance Music/Club Play, and most surprising to me - Latin Pop Airplay.
Toxic is patent Britney when you think about it. It's attractiveness doesn't have anything to do with the beauty of Britney's voice - it's all tied into the arrangement, special instrumentation effects, and the tongue-in-cheek lyrics.
The video for this - which unfortunately, is not included on the cd single version I own - is visually seductive. I mean, who doesn't love seeing Britney in various outfits (love that nude, diamond encrusted body suit and the Alias look she's got goin' on), sticking her tongue down the throats of many. It's something we all dream of ;).
Since the radio version is pretty good to begin with - especially from a dance perspective, I do have to say that I was skeptical on what any of the remixes could offer.
As you might have guessed - the Album Instrumental Mix is all music - no Britney. It's interesting and stands on its own just fine.
The Armand Van Helden Remix Edit is sexy as hell. The opening has Britney saying, Do you feel me now, followed by the looping of what sounds like her breathing. At the same time, there's a whole keyboard and special percussion effects going on. The percussion effects sound like a snake slithering and boy - that adds to the overall sexuality of the track. The next part of the remix - even before the first verse starts - is a deep, throaty keyboard melody. Wow! This is a most excellent remix.
The Felix Da Housecats Club Mix is a little strange and I haven't really made up my mind if I like it or not. It's 7 + minutes of heavy synthesizers mixed with loops of Britney sounds (t-t-t-t-t-t-t-oxic) and drop-spun percussion effects.
Usually, the remixes put at the end of a maxi-single are the weakest. This is definitely not the case for the Lenny Bertoldo Mix Show Edit. It stays truer to the radio/album edit in that it has Britney singing the song from start to end. Different parts of the song are exploited with effects such as extended looping and echos of her voice. Musically, all of the basics are there for a dance mix - but for some reason, the usual just feels right. There are places where he brings a string of notes to an end, silence, and then begins in a different direction.
