Toot & Puddle: a Gift for Toot by Holly Hobbie appeared about a month before the birthday extravaganza that runs from September 21st to October 5th. All three of my sister’s son’s birthdays and her birthday fall between those dates. I made a mental note and then promptly forgot to buy it until the day of the group birthday party. I knew without looking that it would be Jake’s birthday present.
In this story, Puddle is searching for the perfect gift for Toot’s birthday. It must be something exceptional because Toot is exceptional. It must be exotic because Toot has been all over the world. I was under similar restrictions. I needed a very good gift for Jake because for his older brother I had scored a Toy Story 2 POP (those cardboard stand ups used to advertise videos and CDs.) Since I got his brother a 6 foot tall image of Buzz and Woody I was going to have to do something very cool for Jake.
This is very cool. Puddle is so very thoughtful and the gift is so perfect. The watercolors are…well, I said it before, but it still fits, luminous. I had hoped that this would be the gift that would make his eyes pop.
I got to see his eyes pop, but not for this. Oh, he liked it, he made my mother read it to him. But my brother bought Jonathan and Jake each an incredibly expensive Pokemon card (I'm going to misspell it, Charzar.) In comparison to that nothing else mattered, but I have faith that when Pokemon is a memory Jake will think fondly of Toot & Puddle.
