| Darkmistress's Full Review: Toot & Puddle Books |
Toot & Puddle: You Are My Sunshine by Holly Hobbie is one of those kids books that really could be purchased for adults. I’m giving it to my nephew Jake this Christmas because I’ve given him the other 2 and they are well loved, but this one steps a bit out of the mold.
Toot is moody and in this story he is bad moody (in fact, he sounds like me at about 13.) Toot is blue. Very blue. He asks Puddle if his ears are too big, if his eyes are too small, if he is too pink. He is blue. Puddle tries to make him happy and makes a wonderful dessert. Toot is happy! For about an hour. Puddle and Tulip (Tulip is Toot’s pet parrot) try again. They take Toot on an adventure because they think maybe he is bored. The adventure doesn’t work. Toot is still sad. They decide he must be lonely so they invite over all their friends and have a party! Toot is still sad. Sometimes nothing works when you want to shake a blue mood.
But by the end of the book Toot is happy again and it was nothing Puddle or Tulip did. Sometimes nothing you can do shakes a bad mood.
This book is better than Prozac. It’s a beautifully illustrated reminder that sometimes you’re just unhappy and it’s ok to be unhappy. My two favorite illustrations are both very sad. They both depict Toot watching the sun set and both are just heartrending. So, if you know someone of any age who is going through a blue period, buy them this book. They will look at you funny, but, really, it’s better than Prozac.
