| Barbarajo's Full Review: Jay Kordich - The Juiceman's Power of Juicing |
We have all seen the late night infomercials with the highly motivated, energetic, older healthy fellow with the bushy white eyebrows. You know the one that I mean! The one who is selling his now famous Juiceman Juicer.
Of course we all know Jay Kordich, better known as "The Juiceman."
Well. This editorial is not about his Juicer because frankly, I use a Champion. I am however, planning on purchasing The Juiceman Jr. for my parents. I have also asked the small appliance category manager to add the Champion to the list of juicers for review. It is an excellent machine.
I do use Jay's book entitled, The Juiceman's Power of Juicing, faithfully.
Jay first published this book in 1992. It lists for $15.00, but I have seen it for less and I believe he offers it as part of his package if you purchase it from television and are one of the lucky first hundred to call. (Only kidding but could not resist).
In the early forties when Jay was a 20 year-old student at USC on the way to play in the Rose Bowl, Jay was diagnosed with cancer. He was terrified but refused to give up hope especially in light of the poor prognosis that was being offered by his physician. He researched every conventional and alternative medical press release that he could get his hands on. That is how he stumbled across Dr. Max Gerson. Dr. Gerson was treating patients in New York with carrot juice and other natural foods. This idea appealed to Jay, so off he went to the Big Apple (no pun intended). In 2 1/2 years, Jay was a well man.
That was over 50 years ago and he never veered off the path that Dr. Gerson led him too. From that day forward, Jay made a personal commitment to dedicate his life to spread the good word on the power of juicing.
Why Juice and why use a Juicer and not a blender or food processor?
A juicer extracts the life giving juice from the fiber. A blender and processor just puree food and turn it into a liquefied version.
We all know that the human body needs "live food" to build "live cells." One cup of carrot juice contains the nutritional equivalent to 4 cups of raw carrots.
For optimal benefit, most juices must be consumed immediately. At this point, 95% of the food value is instantly released into your bloodstream. Juice therefore provides the body with the necessary nutrients.
Juicing can provide you with all of your bodies nutritional needs, thus eliminating the need for supplementation.
This book is a must for all interested in getting into juicing. Jay conveniently has a chapter on Setting Up a Natural Kitchen. He provides great organizational tips. He even includes tips on shopping for produce, the amount to buy and storage.
Aside from the vast array of heath benefits, listed below are additional benefits of juicing:
~ It provides an excellent way to use excess produce
~ Pulp is excellent for compost piles and gardens
~ You can now buy bulk items that are in season and on-sale.
~ If you are a real trooper, you can grow a lot of your own produce and herbs. Keeps costs down and you now have a great hobby! You can keep your garden organic as well, which brings me to the next question that I want to address.
Do I have to use organic produce?
Certified Organic produce is recommended and preferred. It is more readily available these days and you can even find a wide-variety in your local supermarkets. Prices have come down considerably as well. Remember, even when using organic merchandise, it still needs to be rinsed!
If you cannot purchase or afford the higher-priced organics, several solutions are available on the market that will remove most pesticides. Check with your local health food store. I use Dr. Bronner's Pure-Castile Soap. I have been using this 18-in-one use, all natural product for over 30 years. I primarily use it to bathe, but it does remove pesticides as a diluted solution.
Now for some and I add just some of the health benefits from juicing that you can expect to see:
Acne or other skin blemishes?
Try Jay's Blenish Blaster. This recipe is made with carrots and green bell paper.
Allergy, Asthma, Bronchitis, Sinusitis?
Jay's Lung Tonic is for you. I used this every day for the last few months. This year's allergy season here on the East Coast, got me bad. Carrots, parsley, watercress and potatoes make up this powerful potion of pure cure! Trust me it works.
Want satin skin?
.
Try carrot, apple and ginger. The beauty of this concoction is that it is also a good combo for colds and nausea.
Queasy stomach?
Add a little knob of ginger to any of your vegetable juice mix.
If you are not sure how to properly store items such as parsley or watercress, here is what I do:
~ Parsley and other herbs last longer when placed stem first in a glass of water. Place a plastic bag on top. Keep them cool, dry and upright.
~ Watercress can be placed upside down in an ice bath and placed in the refrigerator.
I don't remember whether Jay provides those two tips, but he does have a section on purchasing and storing.
I have been into juicing on and off for longer than I can remember. 17 years ago, I was diagnosed with a severe case of Hepatitis. Although I went to a conventional doctor, I, like Jay, grabbed all the reading material that I could get my hands on. I also had the good fortune of knowing an ace nutritionist. Most of the juices that I drink are delicious. My favorite morning juice these days is a combo of strawberry, grapefruit and kiwi. My afternoon drink is always carrot based and I change in accordance with my stock, Fennel is a great addition. Apple is probably the best with carrot.
Not all that I drink are delicious. I have made weird concoctions depending on my state of health. For instance, when I had the Hepatitis, I drank Black Radish juice. It is quite nasty tasting. It is said to contain an enzyme called raphenol, (sp)? which is said to regenerate the liver. So does Green Magma and Milk Thistle, but that will be addressed in another epinion.
Well, after consuming this nasty tasting juice, I am happy to state that my liver enzymes dropped to normal and quickly. In fact, my conventional physician asked me for advice on how I achieved what he thought was impossible at that stage of my illness. He passed on the info to several other patients who also saw quick, improved health.
A couple of warnings especially for newbies
~ Always combine green juices with other juices, such as the more palatable carrot or apple. Initially, never consume more than 2 ounces of green juice at a time. Green juices can cause gastric distress. This pertains to items such as: celery, spinach, kale, broccoli, wheatgrass, parsley, watercress, etc.
~ Beet juice is a great body cleanser. If you see red in your stools, do not run to the doctor or hospital. You are not dying.
The Vegetable and Fruit Juice recipes are conveniently separated.
Jay has a comprehensive section on the properties and healing powers of many, many fruits and vegetables. He also lists common ailments and suggests which juices to drink for each.
Want to lose weight by incorporating juice into your life?
Read Jay's section on Juicing For Weight Loss. When I recently resumed juicing, my primary objective was to improve my health, build my immune system and lessen my allergy symptoms. Without trying, I lost 10 pounds in short period of time. This is miraculous for my horrendously slow metabolism. The point is that I firmly believe that juicing does provide so much of your bodies nutritional requirements that it restores it to a state whereby you will systemically function better.
I am most happy to report that my fiance loves his juice! This is another miracle unto itself. He too has enjoyed improved health, especially noted in his skin. He suffers from a scaly form of dermatitis. His eyes are even brighter. The skin develops more elasticity. The most precious benefit, is in the sense of well being you feel after a short period of time
In no way is this epinion intended to diagnose or treat ailments, it should be understood that you should consult your physician or health care provider.
Happy juicing all!
