| ender43's Full Review: The Blue Nile |
The Blue Nile in Berkeley is a very tasty and fun restaurant. If you have not had Ethiopian food before, get a bunch of friends together and go try Blue Nile.
OVERALL: A very fun place to eat. Definitely go with friends. Cozy atmosphere, everyone eats with their hands off of the same plate, ethnic decor, and good, spicy food make this restaurant a must try.
DISHES: The dishes cover a broad range of meats and veggies. For two people, I would recommend 2 combinations of 2 dishes each, so 4 different items. Try getting a chicken, a beef, and 2 different veggies. There are very different spices and types of food, from ultra spicy ground beef, to less spicy baked chicken, to spicy lentils. Notice the word spicy. All of the food is served to you on a big platter, and you get this flat tortilla-like flatbread that you use to pick up the food, then shove it in your mouth. Yum. Very good flavor that you can still taste even though your mouth is on fire.
SERVICE: The service here is pretty good; they explain dishes well and can make suggestions, and are pretty attentive. The place is pretty big and there are not that many people working it seems, so sometimes you can be forgotten.
ATMOSPHERE: The atmosphere is very cozy. The noise level is about average. The decor is very unique and ethnic, with bamboo? mats covering the walls, and various beads and stuff hanging all over. Great to go with friends to share food and gab away, or good as an intimate setting for two. I would says its a pretty good date restaurant, as long as each person can handle spicy food.
PRICE: Most dishes are about $7, but each person should get 2 dishes or a combination if they want to fill up. The flatbread fills you up pretty good, but I want to fill up on the meat and veggies. For two it will cost about $30 after drinks, food and tip. Reasonable, but you seriously must get two dishes each to fill up.
THE BOTTOM LINE: If you can handle spicy food, then it is worth going to the Blue Nile. Tasty food, good atmosphere, and a fun setting make this a great dining experience.
