I have to say the chatam and wells is the most comfortable mattress I have ever owned. It will sag if you do not flip it which is a chore due to the weight, but it has given me the best nights sleep I have ever had. The purchase price of $2300 for a plush king size mattress was steep but I have never slept on a more comfortable mattress. Lay on the mattress in the store and you will feel the differance immediately.

We also have a Chatham and Wells Mattress. We thought we were the only ones who had problems with this mattress. I no longer can stay in my bed all night because I will get a bad backache. My wife wakes up with backaches almost every morning. The $3000+ mattress collapses in the center. This causes incredible discomfort. We are hesitant to but a new mattress because of the money we spent on this one and we are afraid we will just buy another problem, but we have no choice.

I have been fighting with Chattam & well reps about standing up to their reputation & replacing my sagging mattress we have had for 4 years. They say it falls under normal wear & tear. I say that is self serving. This mattress is no better than one that would have cost 1/3 the price! Never again! They will lose more if they don't replace it, because I will never stop bad-mouthing the company!

I never thought buying a mattress would be so difficult. We went to Sit & Sleep and tried alot of different beds....money was not a concern....we just wanted a good night's sleep. Our previous mattress was from a discount center and after 5 years...it completely fell apart. At Sit & Sleep we were told that Chatham & Wells was a superior mattress....the cost $4,000. We were interested in S&F....but the salesman convinced us that C&W was great. The C&W was a nightmare....my husband and I woke up with numb (tingling) limbs! We went back to the store to exchange it and the salesman was no longer there....after a very difficult time with 2 other salesman and 3 managers....we exchanged the mattress with a firmer C&W. My back is killing me and my husband still wakes with numbness in his arms and legs. I would NEVER recommend a Chatham & Wells to anyone. I don't have $4,000. to throw away...but we thought a good sleep was worth the investment....instead we are out of $4,000. and wake up miserable. I would much rather buy a less expensive mattress and replace it every 5 years than make this kind of costly mistake. Do yourself a favor and DON'T buy Chatham & Wells.Unfortunately for me...I learned this tip about choosing a bed after purchasing mine. But here is what I learned to do. Choosing Your Bed: Lie on your back - slip your hand between the base of your spine and the mattress. If you cannot easily do this the mattress may be too soft. If there's a hollow, the mattress may be too firm. Ideally, your hand should be a snug fit. Roll onto your side. Are your hips and shoulders properly supported? Do use a pillow during this process. Try to recreate your normal pre-sleep position. And do remember - remove your jacket, top coat and shoes - and relax! Spend as much time as you need - it's quite normal practice and will give you a much better idea of your likes and dislikes.
Hope this helps!
Good Luck

The "C" name myth is very deceptive. (Reply to this comment)
by scrutineer
The title was for the Cresthaven mattress but it is very different from the Crosswick mattress that is reviewed. This "A, B or C, etc. series" is just a story that this particular shop that you went to tells so that they can always offer less expensive "C" and make you believe you are getting the same mattress that had the high "C" price. They tried the same thing on me. You can get a "C" Cushion Firm, a couple different Plushes and a Pillow Top. There is no way these are all the same "C". A Cresthaven is a "Plush" while a Crosswick is a "Cushion Firm" mattress and it is quite hard. The springs are all the same in all the S&F, yet all the materials outside are very, very different. The Cresthaven is even an inch thicker than the Crosswick. The Crosswick is much, much harder. You need to get out there and lay on them since there are about 40 different mattresses made by S&F all with different materials and comfort levels. Believe me, I made a 4 page Excel spreadsheet just on the S&F mattresses to compare them all. I have gotten ripped off on a mattress for the last time.

Re: Stearns & Foster I bought (Reply to this comment)
by lolaphrump
No, it was a genuine Stearns & Foster "C" series from the Matress Gallery which tends to carry higher end mattresses. I bought the cheapest S&F firm mattress I could which was 899.00 for the set. They go all the way up to 2900.00.

I was in the market for a new mattress myself, and had narrowed it down to a queen sized Stearns & Foster or Chatham & Wells mattress. From what I could tell from the showroom, these are the best quality mattresses around.
However, I would point out that the mattresses were not pillowtops, but somewhere between "firm" and "plush" i.e. "comfort firm, cushion firm or luxury firm." From what I can tell of the epinions comments, just about everyone who bought a Stearns & Foster mattress was satisfied, with the exception of a few who bought pillowtop or plush mattresses (one person did get a "firm" mattress, so I'm stumped there). So, could it be the padding in the plush or pillowtop mattresses that is causing the problem? Also, could this mattress (or a few of the others) been "knockoffs" instead of a genuine Stearns & Foster?
Also, I have had trouble finding information online on Chatham & Wells mattresses. While the mattress in the store appeared to be of good quality, as well as very comfortable, I don't know how durable it is. Does anyone know about the track record of Chatham & Wells? Could a category for this mattress be started in epinions?
