jiastar's Full Review: Steven Banks - Special Delivery!: Spongebob Square...
As half of a married couple who are both avid readers our hope has always been to foster in our children the love of books. Of the two of our children it is our youngest who seems to have caught the bug more than the other. Encouraged by various classroom incentives she can often be found with her nose buried in one book or another.
One of these books is a Ready-to-Read book by Simon & Schuster entitled "SpongeBob Squarepants Special Delivery." It is a level 2 book and in this series that means that it is geared toward a child who is comfortable reading independently.
The story is 29 pages long and text on each page is generally about 1 or 2 sentences. The illustrations are bright and vivid and look for all the world like your favorite SpongeBob episode.
The story follows SpongeBob as he waits for the arrival of a free toy after eating 100 boxes of cereal. It is not a particularly gripping tale. It is rather silly and inane, much like an episode of the television show. It does not teach a lesson or express a moral, but then with SpongeBob that's usually the point. It is sheer silliness for silliness' sake.
The funniest part of the story are the pictures which illustrate exactly how long SpongeBob (and Patrick of course) wind up waiting. While the text is vague, the pictures show Easter, Summer, Halloween and Christmas passing while they camp out by the mailbox.
As a book for an early reader this is certainly appropriate. It is just the right amount of difficulty for the child who is comfortable sitting down by themselves and reading, without needing to stop every few words to ask an adult for help. Most of the words are one or two syllables long, only 2 that I spotted were longer (accident, another). If your child is a fan of the series this book will probably inspire them to attempt to sit down and find out for themselves what happens next with each turn of the page.
SpongeBob sends away for a free toy from the back of a cereal box. He and Patrick are so excited that they vow to wait by the mailbox, day and night, ...More at Alibris
