I have long been looking at getting a DVR, but I've always looked towards getting the DirecTV variety. Unfortunately thats not a possibility where I live, so finally I broke down and got a regular cable-tv one.
What a buy!
My TV viewing has gone up quite a bit, but I actually didn't watch any TV before. Commercials in the middle of shows/movies has always made me look elsewhere for movies (I have a decent collection of DVDs because of that) but now I can just fast forward through the annoying commercials. Also - it will automatically record shows that I watch, so a lot of things I never even thought of watching are now there for my enjoyment. (Of course it also records shows I couldn't care less about, but a quick thumbs-down to the program fixes that).
The remote control works great. It is nicely laid out, and basically replaces my TV remote 90% of the time. The reason it doesn't always replace it is that the non-directv-recorders only have 1 tuner, so if it's recording a program I can't watch another one unless I use my TV remote to switch over ... and then of course I can't pause this other show. In the beginning this annoyed me somewhat, but now that it's really starting to know my tastes I find that I hardly ever watch live TV anymore!
Oh the ads say this is an 80-hour model ... sure - if you are OK with crappy quality. I only record stuff in best quality, and here it's only about 24 hours - still plenty for my needs. (And if I get grumpy with it I can always put one more harddrive in it - there are tons of websites describing how to do this).
This model is also a Series2 Tivo ... right now that means next to nothing as they haven't turned any of the services on. Give it a few months and it should start showing up however. Like access to MP3 files stored on my PC via the Tivo - that is gonna be great!
All in all this little piece of hardware has totally changed my attitude towards TV. It's great!
