The Sony Walkman D-FJ040PS Personal CD Player was exactly what I needed

Pros: Nice features at a fair price, especially for a CD player with AM/FM
Cons: I don't like clip earbuds

At the office, we just moved into transition space while our floor is renovated. The result is that I am in a space with significantly less surface area and I am in a shared office. The result was that I would need to use headphones if I wanted to listen to music during the work day and my existing boom box was too big for the available space.
I started looking for personal cd players with the features I needed
- decent sound (no problem – this is a Sony)
- a not unreasonable price (yes $40 is on the high side, but not outrageously so for a CD player with these features, particularly the tuner)
- anti-shock (I’m klutzy, plus I might use this for cardio once I’m out of transition space)
- AM/FM tuner (needed to check out my White Sox, although with them choking the wild card away, this is not quite so important now)
This seemed to be the best unit based on those criteria. Plus, as I evaluated the unit, I saw that it had the following features:
- Mega bass availability
- 8 different playback modes (I don’t use them much but it’s nice when I do)
Once I bought it, I also noticed it has a hold button feature which means that buttons are not responsive until I unlock it. You can lock the thing once it is going, too, so this would be a perfect option for cardio. It also has a programmability feature for favorite cuts on multiple CDs, although I have not used it yet.
The only real disadvantage was the headphones, which were ear buds attached to a clip. I don’t like this arrangement at all. However, I have enough light open-air headphones (after all, I use this at WORK) so that was not a concern.
The fact that this was a nice design was nice, but not a feature in deciding to buy.
I found this for $40 at Circuitcity.Com and it was available from my local store. So, while I would have to pay sales tax, I would get it right away. Plus circuitcity.com has a 2% rebate available through Ebates.com, which I used.
So, how’s it worked?
Just great. The sound quality on cd play, with and without the mega bass is great at any volume. The volume controls are responsive. The tuner works well with both bands.
This is a small enough unit so it doesn’t take up much work space.
I’ve used the unit fairly regularly, I’d say more than 10 hours now, and am on the first set of alkaline batteries. It’s been more radio than CD, so that might affect the life. However, this unit is much easier on the batteries than others I have had.
This unit has done what I needed and I’m glad I purchased it.
