glowmom's Full Review: Sony 900 Mhz Babycall Nursery Monitor Ntm 910
We have a ranch-style house where the master bedroom is on the other side of the house from the other bedrooms, so a monitor was definitely a necessity for the nighttime.
After checking out the positive reviews at other sites, I had registered and received a Fisher Price Sounds and Lights Dual Receiver" monitor at my baby shower. I liked the two monitors - one for the bedroom and one for around the house. Also the price was right.
For the first week it seemed to work well enough, but soon it stopped working altogether. An exchange did not solve the issue.
The next time, we purchased the Sony NTM-910. What a difference! We've used it worry-free for two years now, and will soon be using it for our second child. Immediately I was impressed with how well thought out this monitor is.
Most importantly, the sound is crystal clear. And the option of turning it on voice activation has been wonderful for us. In the middle of the night, we don't have to listen to background static or him playing his musical toys in the crib. Plus, since we can adjust how sensitive the monitor is by how far away the monitor sits and how high the volume is set on the receiver, it only clicks on for real cries and not just little whimpers in his sleep. This means more sleep for us, which is something every parent can appreciate!
Another tip: When I was first shopping for a monitor, I didn't think that lots of channels was an important feature. I was wrong! We have had very little issues with interference with neighbors' monitors and cordless phones (although it has happened twice briefly in two years). When it does happen, it is easy to change the channel.
Because of the self-recharge feature we've never had to replace the batteries even though occasionally we do have it off the cord.
Another reviewer mentioned that the light bar was so bright it was hard to sleep through. My husband is very sensitive to lights when he is sleeping and it did keep him up for a night or two, but we solved the problem by keeping the receiver further away from him. I personally find the light bar very helpful. Our son was very colicky the first few months, and it was nice having the option of just watching him wake up or fall asleep rather than hearing him - a little break for Mommy's ears, but I'm still completely "tuned in" to the little guy.
The range is also excellent. I have to be at the other side of our large ranch house before I hear the beeping of the out of range alarm. And before this happens, there is still virtually no background static.
Some people will shy away from this model because it only has one receiver. For me, having two receivers would have been a wasted feature; if I need a receiver to carry around in the house I just use the one in the bedroom. But most of the time I can hear my little guy just fine everywhere else.
