SNAP Server 1000
I purchased a SNAP server almost a year ago and it has been in continuous use ever since. In that time I have been extremely happy with it, and when I say happy I mean it works exactly as it’s supposed to without any problems, crashes or supervision. The only time it’s ever even been rebooted is for bios upgrades.
Purchase
At the time of my purchase there weren’t very many options for NAS in the low end price range but SNAP offered the 1000 series in 2 models, a 15GB for $499 and a 30GB for $799(these have now been replaced with 20 & 40GB models for the same price). I went with the 30GB model because I needed to be able a lot amount of data such as CD images and large .wav files. I ordered the unit directly from the company and it arrived in about 3 days.
Installation
Installation of the SNAP server is about painless as it gets, basic installation involves taking it out the box and plugging it into your network and turning it on. I however opted to configure some of the “advanced” options, such as static IP address, multiple shares, and NT authentication. After about an hour I had everything setup to my liking and was ready to put the unit to work.
Use
The first thing I did after getting running was started copying files, I took it easy at first with just a few megs worth of files and performance is quite good. Then I copied about 5 GB of files over and the unit kept up fine. Since then I have continued to use it heavily without a single problem.
Support
Even though I have never had a problem I was quite impressed when Quantum actually called me one day to inform me that an update was available, explained the new features, and how to obtain it. If there ever were a problem I would expect that level of service to carry over to there support practices.
Overall
The SNAP is specifically designed to do only on thing and do it well, act as a file server. Because of this specialization you get a fast, reliable affordable appliance at a reasonable price that is well suited for small business.
