Review of Serta Perfect Sleeper Mattress (April 8, 2004)
Several months ago, we had a party at our house with close friends and relatives. A group of the young children were having fun jumping on our king sized bed. When I went to lie down in my bed that night I got a big surprise. A spring had popped up and the tip of it was protruding through the mattress and sheets. It poked me right in the butt. Oweeeee! My wife exclaimed, “I’m sick of this bed – we need to get a new one!” I told her it was no big deal and flipped the mattress over.
However, when the wife says we need something, we need it. So off we went to the mattress stores to shop for a new mattress. There were lots of them! Thick ones, thin ones, all different sizes to choose from. Several brands too. We went to several stores and I proceeded to lie down on the display mattresses that interested me. My wife asked me to stop, but a salesman came over and said that what I was doing was perfectly all right and persuaded her to lie down on it too. Soon, all the customers in the store were lying down on the mattresses!
I asked one salesman his opinion of which was the best selling mattress. He told me it was the Serta Perfect Sleeper. It is a traditional mattress that was built to hold up, extremely comfortable, and it was reasonably priced (not to say that Serta was one of the major brands the store carried). He led us over to the sample display and we plopped down on it. Sure enough, it was extremely comfortable!
I explained to him what had happened to our old mattress. He laughed and proceeded to show us a cross section of the mattress and he explained why that would never happen to this Serta mattress. This mattress has a continuous support innerspring – a coil system that supports the sleeper. The coils are tightly wound so they cannot be separated. He also showed us the “comfort quilt” that covered the spring system that he claimed was indestructible.
I noticed that mattress had a soft but tough fabric covering over it. The salesman explained that this covering is both stain resistant and puncture resistant. It also had double stitching around the edges.
The fact that shopping for a mattress was not necessarily one of my favorite things to do, combined with how comfortable this mattress felt, plus the salesman’s testimony sold me on the mattress. They were also having a big sale that day on Serta mattresses! My wife was equally impressed. We order the firm mattress (there were both firm and soft mattresses available).
The mattress was delivered the next day. The deliverymen had no trouble getting the mattress into our bedroom since it came in two pieces (like two twin sizes mattresses). We did not order a new box spring, as the one we had was just fine. Back in the store, the salesman told us we could get the box spring cheap if we wanted it, but we decided to decline the offer.
I noticed that the new Serta mattress was a bit thicker than our old mattress. It also seemed a bit rounder in the middle of the mattress – probably because it was brand new. However, it looks just great! Of course, I pounced down right on top of it and tried it out. Ahhhh! It felt just as great as when I was in the store!
My wife is amazingly happier with the new mattress. She claims she gets a better night’s rest on the new mattress. As to me, I can sleep on a bed of stones and sleep. However, I also think the mattress feels great. We are impressed out how it never makes any noises when you move on it, like the old one. Also, when she gets up at night to check on our baby, I never hear her get up because the mattress does not move around.
The king sized mattress does come with a hefty price tag. The regular price was about $1950. However, they had a 50% clearance sale, so we saved a lot. Delivery and set up was also free. They also took away our old mattress, however, we purchased from a local brick and mortar store. Other stores and Internet stores may not offer these options.
I would highly recommend the Serta Perfect Sleeper Mattress. It is a well-known brand name and it comes with a host of warrantees and guarantees. Most of all, it is comfortable and provides for a great night sleep. The only that was lacking was the cute little sheep…. Thank you for reading my review and best wishes for a great night sleep!
