| serc's Full Review: Scrabble 50th Anniversary |
I received the Scrabble 50th Anniversary Collector's Edition for Christmas a couple of years ago; it has become the most popular game in our house. We tote it with us on vacations and slyly persuade visitors to play "just one game" before they leave. Even our two-year-old son, Alex is interested, although I think he just wants to get his hands on the tiles.
Scrabble was on my wish list for Christmas the year I got it, but I didn't expect such a fabulous edition. The coolest thing is the structure of the board - it sits on a kind of rotating platform, which makes is easy for every player to have the board face them when it is their turn. The platform is hollow, and when in use acts as a storage area for all of the pieces of the game.
The game includes the board; 4 letter stands that give the letter frequency (for example, it tells you that there are 9 A's in the game); the tiles - beautiful, blue, and so smooth that you wish you could eat them; a very nice drawstring bag to store the tiles in; the rotating platform; a guide booklet with rules and helpful tips and word lists; an official word list; and a timer for those who want to set time limits on turns. (We've never tested the timer out, and I admit, our games can get really long). It all fits neatly into the box for easy storage. The only thing that I have added is some scratch paper and a pen, so that I don't need to hunt for them when preparing to play.
The idea of Scrabble is to build words out of the 7 tiles that you are given and the words that others form on the board. The goal, of course, is to win the most points, and to aid in this pursuit, you can use various spots on the board for double letter, double word, triple letter, and triple word scores. (Double letter doubles the points of the letter that lands on that board spot; double word doubles the whole score, etc.)
The official rules state that you can't look words up before playing them, but we find that if we followed that rule, the game would go on forever. We modify it to fit our lives, and you should feel free to do the same with this and any game. (Shhhhh - don't tell any purists!)
This Scrabble set is a great thing to have around the house for rainy days, to take on vacations, to bring to family gatherings, or to give as a gift. It is reasonably priced and would be enjoyed by anyone who likes word games.
