"Holy Cr*p...Your grass is really green!" That's what my buddy told me the first time I used this stuff!
I live in Winnipeg, Manitoba. If you are not familiar with the weather up here, it is all about extremes! Sure we have cold winters, but our summers can be extremely hot as well. When I bought my first house, I wasn't really sure what to fertilize the lawn with. I asked around, and I researched it on the internet. What I gathered was that the first time you fertilize early in the growing season, it is recommended that you use a fertilizer with a strong nitrogen concentration. I wandered to my local Home Depot, and saw the Scotts turf builder. Make no mistake, it had the highest nitrogen concentration I could find. Most of the fertilizers I found had a "22" as the nitrogen number, this stuff has a 29! I also needed a spreader, so I bought the Scott's broadcast spreader. They work well together! Now, the reason I mentioned the local weather earlier was that it was a really warm spring in Winnipeg that year. In fact I was concerned that I might burn out my lawn. But, written on the bag is a "No-Burn Garranty!" As long as you follow the directions on the bag, all should be well. I was skeptical, but gave it a whirl! I am glad I did! The grass came in that year thick and green. I was the first on the block to have a green lawn!
I continued to use the Scotts turf builder throughout the entire summer, and I had no burn marks on the lawn! It really works!
The downside to the whole experience were weeds. Unfortunately this particular blend does not include herbicides. The grass grew green and tall, but so did the dandelions. What I learned from this was that I could fertilize really early in spring with the turf builder, and then soon after with another Scott's fertilizer with herbicides. This tamed them dandelions!
The results of the whole experiment with Scott's were that I had the best lawn on the block. It greened fast, and looked great. My friends and neighbors have asked what I was using on my lawn, and as a result are now believers in Scott's as well! Buy this stuff, and follow the directions on the bag. You can't go wrong! It may cost a couple bucks more than the generic brands, but it is well worth it!
