Ive been reading all the entries in this Step Into Pets write-off and decided to jump on in and crash the party. But first, wait a minute, the food I feed my cats wasnt in the data bank. One quick short letter to Ladysmom, our esteemed hostess and voila, within a few minutes of sending the e-mail, the category was created
How special was that? Very special, I must say.. A great big thank you Ladysmom!
Ive been a cat owner or should I say been owned by cats most of my adult life, with anywhere from 5 cats at one time to the precious two that share my life now..I love my cats as do all of you out there Im sure and like you, want to provide the best nutrition and life I can for them.. About 2 years ago, one of my cats,Luke, who most of you have heard of or read about already, is a big bopper of a cat, he is black and white with funny and unique markings... Im not sure what breed he is since I found him in my yard 3 years ago, but thankfully he has always been in good health. The only problem I seemed to find with him, other then his shyness and fear of other people, is a white flakiness I see on his coat, sort of like dandruff.
After pointing this out to his Veterinarian, she told me it might be a result of a lack of essential oils in his diet and I might try to add some Vitamin E and/or fish oils to his food. Problem was that the minute I attempted to do that neither he or my other sweetie would have anything to do with the food.. Even the Omega 3 fish oils turned them off.
One day while in my local Pet Supermarket I saw a new food being introduced by Hills Science Diet,
(which was what I was already feeding my cats but the regular formula), this one said on the package in big purple letters, Sensitive Skin, Advanced Skin and Coat Nutrition. Hmmm, I thought, this might be the answer Im looking for. So I bought the smaller sized bag, and hoped they wouldnt turn their noses up at the change in their food..I did what was recommended when changing your pets food and introduced a little at a time mixing it up with the other food...There was no problem, they seemed unaware of the change and eventually when that was the only food in the bowl didnt seem to notice or mind
So, what is different about this food you ask? According to the bag the food is formulated for cats with dry, flaky or sensitive skin or a coat that does not look shiny and healthy Well, Lukes coat is shiny and healthy looking but did have those flakes, so I thought the fact that the added higher levels of Vitamins E, C and Selenium in the antioxidant formula along with the high fatty Acid levels of Omega 6 and Omega 3 oils could only be good for him while providing a genuine strong immune system and get rid of the dryness that was causing the flakiness in his coat.
Both my cats are indoor cats so they do not suffer from fleas or other problems associated with outdoor cats...Only Luke used to scratch occasionally but since feeding them this food I very rarely see him scratch the way he did and neither one of them sheds very much or has hairballs,(that also could be from the cat grass they nibble on that I grow for them)... I wont say Lukes flakiness is completely gone, but on a scale of one to ten, ten being what he had before, Id say hes down to a 3 or 4.
Misha, my other cat, seems to have thrived on this food too so the fact that both of them enjoy it and are getting such good nutrition from the formula that provides the complete nutrition they need, I will continue to feed them Hills Sensitive Skin Science Diet Food as long as they continue to eat it without a fuss.
I love the fact that they get the higher levels of Vitamins E, C and Selenium which provides, along with the healthy skin, strong healthy bones and teeth and will also slow the cell damage, which happens to all of us, while providing the important proteins, Calcium, Zinc, Vitamin B2 and Iron for overall health and longer life.
They both truly seem to enjoy the taste and now I buy the bigger bag that comes in the 8.5 lb bag for the price of $17.99. One of these bags lasts at least a month so its not all that much more costly then the supermarket brands and occasionally I find $3.00 off coupons in my Sunday paper..I also have joined the Pet Supermarket Club which offers a free bag with every 10 that you buy when you save your receipts and UPC code labels from the empties. They even provide a handy envelope to keep everything in.
So, if you see your cat scratching or with dry flakes in his or her coat I highly recommend this product and hope it works for your cats as well as it does mine..Even without the problem skin the ingredients are very beneficial for all cats, to keep them with us for as long as possible.
For those interested in the ingredients they are:

I wrote this before my cat socks showed up on my doorstep and before Luke had to stop eating all foods that weren't his prescription food.
