Pros: Decent example of a mild stout, nice label design
Cons: nothing special - decent, drinkable and mostly unremarkable.
The Bottom Line: If you are indulging in the Saranac 12 beers, you'll probably enjoy this - but don't waste your time with a full 12-pack.

"On the second day of Christmas, my true love gave to me, a dark beer the color of the nighttime sea."
about SARANAC
Saranac beers are brewed by the Matt Brewing Company, a brewery located in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains in Central New York. Over a century old, the brewery is currently being run by the third and fourth generations of the Matt Family (Nick and Fred, respectively). Today, the company brews a number of different beers (27 different beers in the recent past, including seasonals and limited editions), as well as 5 different soft drinks.
about STOUT
I like stouts, but I have found 'stout' to have different meanings to different brewers. I had never indulged in Saranac Stout but I figured that this would offer me a great opportunity to do so.
The Saranac Stout is a milk or cream stout, so it should be relatively smooth. I poured it into my trusty pint glass and waited for the show to beging. It pours to a deep coffee color and a large beige head which proved to be thick and tasty in and of itself. The smoky nose offers up more than a hint of the malt within its depths. The first taste gives you evidence of coffee flavor which lingers on the tongue but never really comes through. It does leave nice foam rings on the glass, but little else - this is definitely a milder stout than most (evidenced by an ABV of 5.4% ABV?). One other thing - I do like the bottle - one of the better designs in the Saranac stable.
final THOUGHTS
As far as stouts go, this is a middle of the road offering. It's not bad, but there are much better versions out there from the ever-present Guinness to a variety of Bell's Stouts.
random BEER FACT
The oldest known recipe in the world (on a 4,000-year-old Mesopotamian clay tablet) was for beer.
