| chrisceb's Full Review: Sally Hansen Hard As Nails |
It’s only been till recently (around 5 years ago) that I became quite picky about my nail products. Over the years I’ve tried numerous brands of this and that, then finally found a few tried and true product that I stick with. O•P•I being one, and another being Seche Vite topcoat. (Both, I’ve written reviews on, if your interested.) However, base coat isn’t something I’m very selective with.
I normally just go to Sally Beauty and grab something that looks good, or that I’ve never tried before. This time was different. I was out of base coat, and I have Epinions now. Not only does epinions affect my purchasing decision because of recommendations of members from my WOT, but also because I want my shot at writing about the product also.
The Product:
Sally Hansen Hard As Nails is a nail strengthener. It helps prevent nail problems such as chipping, splitting and cracking. Sally Hansen boasts it’s Hard As Nails…
“Gives your nails a hard, smooth, chip-resistant surface that helps strengthen and support nails.”
That’s a lot of promise coming out of such a small .45 oz. bottle. The bottle isn’t your typical nail polish-looking bottle. Sally doesn’t give you much to hold on to as she does with her regular polishes and lacquers. The lid is just a ½ inch high with the polish brush attached. The bottle is tall and round, which makes it hard to hold on to.
Hard As Nails can be worn as a base or topcoat, and it can also be used alone. For anyone who is interested, the ingredients include: Butyl Acetate, Isopropyl Alcohol, Ethyl Acetate, Nirocellulose, Tosylamide/Formaldehyde Resin, N-Butyl Alcohol, Dibrutyl Phthalate, Camphor, Benzophenone-1, and some coloring.
Hard As Nails is Dermotologist tested and it’s recommended you keep it away from heat and flames.
My Experience:
I just purchased Sally Hansen Hard As Nails this week, and it’s the first time I’ve ever recommended a product after only one use. Yeah, you heard me right, I’m going to five star this puppy just after one use.
I use a base, two color coats and a topcoat when I paint my nails in hopes that it will last longer than two days. I try and take the extra steps to insure a longer staying manicure.
So I sit down Tuesday night and begin the ritual. I read the directions and notice they said to apply two coats and to allow each coat to harden before applying another one. I’m used to a quick dry topcoat, so this seemed tedious to me, but I survived. After the double application topcoat, I applied two coats of color (lacquer of course!) and my quick dry topcoat.
One thing I noticed about the Hard As Nails is, after it dried it had some barely noticeable fibers in it. I actually wondered if they’d show through my color coats, as they did seem a little rough. I was pleasantly surprised when there was no trace of them once my color and topcoat was applied. However, I’m a little leery of using it as a topcoat because of this reason.
My nails looked great after I polished them, they also looked great on Wednesday, and Thursday also. I have my hands in a lot of water and between baths for my kids (and for myself for that matter), dishes and cleaning dirty hands and faces through the week, I give my nail products a good work out. Even with my amazing topcoat, I usually have flaking of polish, or at the very least it starts to “give way” at the cuticle.
Friday came and went, and so did Saturday, and here I sit, on Sunday evening with a manicure that just won’t budge! I’ve not had one crack, peel or chip from my nails or polish. They look almost as good as they did on Tuesday when I polished them. I say “almost” because I’m quite sure if I used the product as the instructions suggest, I probably wouldn’t have that obligatory polish rub off at the tips. The instructions say to make sure your nails are free of enamel, oil or cream and then brush Hard As Nails onto the nail surface just like color. They also recommend to brush around the nail edges and under the nail tips. I didn’t do this, as I find it extremely messy, but I’m sure I would have no problems with my polish withstanding the workout I give it if I did.
The price is amazing for what you get. Hard As Nails was $1.88 at Wal-Mart and it came with a free nail clipper also. I’m quite anxious to see just how long my manicure stays.
This powerhouse nail base in a bottle is astonishingly better than any other base coat I’ve ever purchased. And some of them were five times the cost. Even though I’ve only used it one time, I can see it will be a nail product essential for me.
I noticed on the product page that it comes in colors. I didn’t notice Hard As Nails in any colors at Wal-Mart; however, I did notice it in a translucent buff tone along with the clear. It was a pail light tan color and it was in the same bottle as the clear.
I very highly recommend Sally Hanson Hard as Nails if you want a long lasting manicure. Honestly, I could care less if it strengthens my nails. I don’t have much of a problem of chipping or peeling nails. I do have an occasional break now and then if I don’t continually wear nail polish. So the strengthening fibers are just an added bonus for me, as was the nail clipper!
For $1.88 a bottle, it doesn’t make your wallet ache if you don’t like it…so what are you waiting for?
