bonniesayers's Full Review: Safety 1st Deluxe Rollershade 2 Pack
Over the past seven years I have had two vehicles and numerous sunshade products for the windows. I placed them on the back windows when I had a station wagon and my oldest child was an infant. This came in handy when we drove from New Jersey to Florida when he was six weeks old. Now in my minivan I have the Safety 1st Roller Shade on the passenger windows that both boys sit beside in the back with other brands on the last set of windows.
I have seen many vehicles on the road with sunshades on the back window and the passenger side in front. Since I have a wiper in the back of my window I prefer not to use one there. I do not have a passenger side mirror to see cars so would rather not obstruct my view with another sunshade there. If only I could block those damaging ultra violet sun rays from me the driver of the vehicle!
These items are available at Kmart, Toys “R” Us as well as automotive stores. The last set I purchased I also bought wiper blades. It turns out the employees at the automotive stores will install these for you and assist with applying the sunshades on the windows. The first order of business before opening the package is to clean and dry your windows. I would wait for nighttime to do this when it is not so hot outside, because you need to hold it in place for a minute to set it in place. Also it does not hurt to have it keep overnight before going out and driving and have busy hands start playing with it or tugging at it.
For some reason there are car washes that will remove these so they can clean the windows on the inside, and I had one side left on the empty car seat. Since my ex husband takes the car to be washed I am not there to inform them not to do this, so use caution when you go to one of these places. The extra suction cups can be placed in your glove compartment box for safe keeping. I will admit to trying this both vertically and horizontally to see what would work best for us. The suction cup needs to be moistened when fastening to the window, the first time and when adjusting it in the future.
I have never been able to fit two shades on any window, plus it would look too busy, so I use each shade for one window only. The windows that I use the Safety 1st Roller Shade do not open the traditional way, so I use the suction cups. For a vehicle that has roll down windows there is the option to keep the window partially open and attach it with the clip. This would not work with my kids though. One suction cup is for the top with the other one for the bottom. There is a small black button to press to move the shade up.
Our shades are a beige type color with little bubbles or holes in them to keep the rays out of harms way. They also have clear and darker colors in a larger wide size as well. The trick is getting the suction cup through the loop at the bottom and then attaching it firmly in place.
I have struggled in the past, and prefer to do this when kids are not with me. I always do this in the car while in the parking lot at the automotive store, just saves time and if there is a problem, help is just a few feet away. I try to place the Safety 1st Roller Shade closer to where my kids are sitting and not always in the middle.
We know the times of the day that the sun is hitting the back seat and bring along sunglasses for the ride. This only works for the seven-year old and I have kept a sheet in the back to place over the hooks in the minivan to block out the sun. The two pack is priced under twelve dollars and money well spent. Years ago I could not drive anywhere without seeing the Baby on Board tag on the back of a car, now sunshades are on every car I see that has a child or even elderly passengers riding along.
As stated in my cons, when I turn my head to see if a car is in the left lane so I can move over, sometimes the shade is distracting me. The same happens on the other side due to not having a mirror. These are little annoyances that you get used to and make adjustments for. These fit all windows and protect us year-round in the hot Southern California sun. This helps us in our vehicle that has non-working air conditioning. When we go inside a store for awhile to shop the carseat will not be hot due to the protection of the Safety 1st Roller Shade and keeps the contents on the seat private.
A child’s disposition will be cheerier and no sweaty foreheads or squinty eyes peering outside the windows. A happy passenger makes the ride so much smoother, especially for new parents that might take frequent car trips to help a colicky baby get to sleep. The material of the roller shade feels foamy and the cups are slippery before applying to the window. According to the website for Safety 1st they expand up to 14 inches. Unfortunately, it is too hot inside my car to go there and measure the shade. The shade does cover the width of the booster seat my son sits in.
They are also easy to remove and slide over to another portion of the window if you realize later on that the placement has left a spot open. You will need to wipe clean the suction cup and the window before re-applying. I personally have never cleaned the roller shades. This would make a perfect gift for a baby shower, since this is a product that can be easily overlooked. That is until you get the baby in the seat and place him in the car, and those rays of sun stream through the windows.
Ideal for cars, mini-vans and SUVs, this protective rollershade expands up to 14 inches wide to help shade children from the sun's harmful rays. The s...More at Amazon Marketplace
