Being pet owners, my wife and I believe the quality of food is very important to our pets. Simply put, and like us humans, better quality food yields better physical quality of life. Keep in mind though the best quality food is not the "magic bullet" for dispositions that may already exist in your pet's genes.
Just this past year, we acquired a cute little Chihuahua, and so the hunt for the best quality food began. Our little puppy was weaned on Pedigree brand food. Of the smorgasboard of dry dog food available, we knew Pedigree is pretty much your "run of the mill" dog food: very affordable, widely available and generally nutritious... but we are more discriminate than what Pedigree offered.
Since its advisable to gradually change the brand of food with each meal (adding more of the new brand food from the old brand with each meal/day), we tried a couple of different better quality foods. We tried out Nutro Complete, Wellness, and eventually Royal Canin in those orders respectively.
Although Nutro and Wellness brand touts as having superior ingredients (Wellness having "human grade" ingredients), one major point of its food stuck out though: the size of its nuggets. Our Chihuahua likes both of these brand foods, but eating the nuggets always seem to be a struggle and a chore; it would take a nugget or two, then break them into smaller pieces, eat it, then head back to the food dish to repeat the process all over again. I'm sure Nutro and Wellness have the general dog population in mind, thus I can understand its justification to the size of its nuggets.
My wife and I discovered Royal Canin from a visit at a smaller, pet store (The Pet People). We knew these smaller stores have better selection for dog/cat foods, since they usually carry brands not usually found at your Petsmart type of stores (or at least Petsmart won't always be the first to carry new dog food brands). Everytime we visit the Pet People, not only are they thoroughly knowledgable in pet food, but they are very enthusiastic in providing the best for pets. I figured this would be the best place to find a good food recommendation.
Having told the salesperson what kind of foods we were looking for for our Chihuahua, our salesperson immediately scurried us towards Royal Canin Mini. I was skeptical at first thinking our salesperson may be getting some sort of "incentive" from how much Royal Canin food he sells, but he told us up front otherwise.
The first and major factor he pointed out about trying Royal Canin is because it makes food for SPECIFIC sized dogs. That in itself is the major selling point simply because Royal Canin has formulated its food in the best interest of the size of pet you own. Don't get me wrong, there are other brands available that contain superior ingredients, but they are usually made for all dogs in general. I figured, rather than buying a suit at a store, why not get a tailored one if its available?
The Second selling point for the Small Breed Adult food is its nuggets. Its "X" shaped nuggets are about half the size, if not smaller, than other brands.
I can give you all the boring details like ingredients, guaranteed analysis, calorie content...etc. but I'll spare you the time as I've already compared them for you. Generally speaking, there is hardly any difference in food ingredients from the other brands that we used. Since the Small Breed dog food contains "100% wholesome and natural food", whatever extra ingredients it has is specifically formulated for small breed dogs.
On the whole, our Chihuahua has taken the Royal Canin Mini dog food much better than it did with Nutro or Wellness. It eats with ease knowing she doesn't have to break the food apart anymore. I knew I was on to something good for my dog when, as we gradually introduced Royal Canin into her food, she would only pick and eat the Royal Canin food! Healthwise, her coat is very shiny and smooth. She's also pretty active, at times keeping us awake during the wee hours of the night (but I think its because she's still an adolescent). Also, we recently visited the Chihuahua's siblings for a little get together. Our dogs siblings were still fed with Pedigree, but the major difference in their overall appearance! The other Chihuahuas were overweight and doesn't seem to be able to keep up with our dog's level of activity (the dog owners were surprised themselves on the lean-ness of our dog from theirs).
I highly recommend Royal Canin Mini for your small breed dog. Remember, its specifically made for your dog, so why not give your pet a quality food it deserves!
