| elainehn's Full Review: Roly Polys Rolled Sandwiches |
WHAT the heck is a Roly Poly sandwich or do I even want to know? is exactly what my boss asked when I offered to pick him up some lunch while I was out getting mine!
I rolled my eyes, forced a little laugh laugh, but to be honest, I felt the same way only a few weeks ago ... I'd never heard of or seen a Roly Poly Rolled Sandwich shop before the one up the street opened. But now, the cashier has my name written on my order slip before I can get from the door to the order area ... the wrap guy doesn't say "Come back to see us ..." as he hands me my sandwich ... instead he says "See you tomorrow?" and grins!
Roly Poly the Original Rolled Sandwiches is the newest 'fast food' fad to hit our small college town. According to their carry out menu they serve "unique rolled sandwiches ... made with the finest quality meats, cheeses, fresh vegetables & spreads, rolled up tight in giant soft flour tortillas" ... and I think that's a pretty accurate description. I have yet to have a sandwich that wasn't fresh, delicious and tasty. Everything from crisp curly lettuce, to red ripe tomatoes, to cool cucumbers, to spicy peppers ... meats from tender delicious ham to light moist chicken to hearty roast beef to tuna salad to smoked salmon ... cheeses from the familiar American slices to melty slabs of brie to spicey pepper jack ... and enough 'unusual' sandwich fillers to jump start any boring lunch hour ... pineapple, raisins, cashews, sesame seeds, hummus, sprouts, mango chutney, cranberry sauce, basil mayo, and on and on and on ...
The almost overwhelming menu board at Roly Poly displays 50 sandwich choices grouped in a 10 or so catagories (Veggies, Turkey, Chicken, Ham & Pork, Beef, Seafood, Some like it Hot, Last but not least, etc.) and there is the 'Roll Your Own' option if you don't see anything on the menu that pleases you. Our local shop also offers 2 'local favorites' each day which are displayed at the end of the menu, but can be ordered any day even if they aren't on the menu board. I've picked up a couple of Roly Poly to-go menus and have one in my purse and one at home, so when I go by or call in my order I pretty much know what I want and I think most of the 'regulars' learn the menu pretty quickly ... but I sympathize with the dazed construction workers who stumble in for the first time and are baffled by the odd menu selections and the sheer number of choices. I can imagine my own dad going into the place and after staring at the menu for several minutes grumbling ... "Can't you just get a ham & cheese blimpie in this place?" ('blimpie' seems to be how he refers to ANY fastfood sandwich).
My favorite Roly Poly may be the Basil Cashew Chicken - white meat chicken salad, cashews, fresh basil, spicy thai sauce, avocado, lettuce, tomato, sprouts ... or is it the Delhi Chicken - curried chicken salad, swiss cheese, bacon, avocado, pineapple, lettuce, sprouts, mango chutney ... or is it the Organic Jack - jack cheese, lettuce, tomato, avocado, carrot, cucumber, green pepper, sprouts, creamy italian dressing, upon request: onion, hot peppers ... maybe I don't have a favorite ... maybe I like at least half the menu?!?!? If you'd care to see the full selection you can check out their menu at http://www.rolypoly.com/index.html
Other menu items include - a choice of two soups of the day, chips (including many 'baked' or 'wow' (low fat) varieties), soft drinks, tea, dessert rolys, brownies, and cookies. The soup seems to be pretty standard restaurant faire ... nothing special, but not bad. The dessert rolys are fantastic if you have a sweet tooth - sweetened cream cheese and various toppings (nuts, fruits, preserves, chocolate chips, etc.) rolled up and toasted then sprinkled with powdered sugar. YUMMMMM!!!!
Prices are about what I expect to pay for 'sub' type sandwiches in our area ... $3.25 - $3.75 for a half sandwich, $5.50 - $6.00 for a whole ... and making it a combo with chips and a drink adds about $1.50 to the price. The customer service has been at least acceptable and usually friendlier and quicker than most of our local fast food places each and every time I've been there. Much better than the surley slow service at most places around here. The store is ALWAYS clean, the decor is bright and cheery (bordering on gawdy ... but it's a fastfood place, right? ... we aren't expecting white linens and crystal chaneliers) Delivery is available in some areas ... ours comes with a minimum $15 order so I usually call in my order and drive over to pick it up. Some Roly Poly shops have "Quick Picks" available in a self serve cooler ... these are some of their most popular menu choices, premade and wrapped for individual sale. If you don't need anything special with your order, you can just walk in, pick one up and pay the cashier ... however our location does not have this option available yet.
Roly Poly offers a kid's meal with a choice of about 4 or 5 sandwich selections, chips a drink and a cookie for either $3.25 ... a bit more than your average 'happy meal'... but WAY better and a bit healthier maybe. Kid friendly choices include PB&J, grilled cheese, chicken melt, turkey & cheese (but you have to ask for lettuce & tomato or else they don't put any), and I think one more that I can't remember?!?!?! There is no toy surprise.
I would recommend Roly Poly to anyone who is tired of the same ole same ole for lunch ... and great for a quick family supper ... there's something for every taste! There are approximately 50 Roly Poly shops (with about 50 more currently planned) in Alabama, Arizona, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia ... you can check out the map on their website to find the one nearest you ... and to get franchise information if you are so inclined!
