hyundai_fan's Full Review: Robitussin Sugar Free Cough Formula Children and A...
Monday morning, 5:29 AM. You wake up only to find that you have a bad cough and chest congestion. Sure, call your doctor and let him tell you to take "these two pills" and call you in the morning. Or, take Robitussin Sugar Free medicine.
Of course, it is a good idea to talk to your doctor before taking any medication especially if you have any medical conditions.
I advise this because it was three months ago my mother was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes. You can't just take any medication over-the-counter or eat cough drops like candy. There has to be a safe way to get rid of a sickness without affecting the medical condition. A week ago, she happened to cough a lot due to a "head sickness" she likes to call it. Knowing this, she went out and bought some Robitussin Sugar Free, Alcohol-Free liquid cough suppressant.
At $5 a bottle, it must work to some degree given its 4-OZ bottle.
The Rules
If you are coughing a lot and have chest congestion, you can buy this medicine. It temporarily relieves cough due to minor throat and bronchial irritation as it may occur with cold, as well as help loosen mucus and bronchial secretions to make coughs more productive.
Adults and children 12 and up should take 2 teaspoons of Robitussin every four hours. Those 6 to twelve take 1 teaspoon every four hours. Children 2 to 6 take 1/2 teaspoon every (you guessed it), 4 hours. Under 2, well, call a doctor.
Warnings
Do not use if you use an MAOI (drugs that help depression, emotional conditions or Parkinson's Disease) or two weeks after not using MAOI.
If you have too much mucus, or if you a chronic cough due to asthma, smocking, chronic bronchitis or emphysema, ask a doctor before use.
Stop using and ask a doctor if the cough lasts for more than a week, or comes back with fever, rash or headaches. It could be a more serious condition other than a cold.
Ask a doctor before use if you are pregnant and/or breast feeding.
How it worked on us
Because of the cold my mother had, I had it too, so we both used this product. Taking the recommended dose of 2 teaspoons for every four hours, we waited for the effects. Half an hour later, we noticed that the coughing had settled.
The Taste
Suprisingly, it has no particular taste to it, even though it tastes similar to a weak bubble gum. It's not that grape stuff, so I didn't get a bad after-taste.
What's different from the original Robetussin
Robitussin took aim for those who have Diabetes by taking out the sugar, fructose, sorbitol, dyes and carbohydrates from the medicine as well as keeping the sodium low.
Now, I heard of everything out of it, but what exactly is in it?
You should store this between 68-77*F (20-25*C). A 2 teaspoon dosage cup is provided.
Pros
Made by A-H-Robins, Robitussin has been the mot effective brand of medicine I've ever taken. Similar to Triaminic, It does the job and does it well. It works after 30 minutes at the most and only two days after taking it, both of our colds subsided to where we didn't have a cold anymore. But these colds were mainly coughing so it may take longer for more advanced sicknesses.
I liked how this medicine has not tasted terrible, compared to the grape flavors from other brands such as Day/Ni-Quil, and it's not even strong. There's not much after-taste. It tastes great.
For it being 4 OZ (118 mL) a bottle, you can take about 52 doses for 2 teaspoons each. That'll last a while.
There is absolutely no side effects that I experienced. It's non-drowsy and narcotic-free.
Cons
I wish they made Diabetic formulas for the rest of their line-up. If I had a headache with a stuffy nose and I needed it for Diabetics, I would not be able to feel better after taking this, knowing it only works for coughs and chest congestion.
If you like this, try:
Robitussin (Original)-For chest congestion and dry cough.
Robitussin DM-Frequent coughs and chest congestion.
Robitussin PE-Nasal stuffiness, chest congestion and dry cough.
Robitussin CF-Nasal stuffiness, frequent coughs and chest congestion.
Conclusion
It's a great medicine that does not taste awful. I wouldn't know what I'd do without it.
