| ejjiii's Full Review: Redhook Double Black Stout |
This evening I decided to try something a little different in the beer category. As I perused my local grocer’s shelves, a lonely 22-ounce bottle caught my eye. Beer brewed with coffee. Amazing! So, more out of curiosity than anything else, I decided to try Red Hook Ale Brewery’s Double Black Stout, brewed with Starbuck’s Coffee. With Seattle’s two favorite sons, Red Hook and Starbuck’s teaming up, it was too intriguing a combination to pass up.
As I poured this dark beauty into a frosty pint glass, the first thing I noticed was that this was a case of truth in advertising. This Double Black Stout is very nearly black. Held up to the light, you cannot see through the glass. A thick, creamy brown, long-lasting foamy head topped the glass. Normally, I drink lagers and do not care much for Stout Ales. But the aroma of beer with a faint wafting of coffee had my attention. With breathless anticipation, I took a sip, and…. I actually liked it!
This beer does not have the dreaded aftertaste of many stout beers that I have tried in the past. This beer has a very full, hearty and complex taste. You definitely can taste the rich coffee flavor, especially if you let the beer sit in your mouth a few seconds before swallowing.
I would recommend this beer if you are in the mood to nurse a couple of beers over many hours, because it is very filling. It is like the beer version of dessert. As a matter of fact, this beer would be a great beer for after a big dinner – not with a meal. Taking this to it’s illogical extreme: It is the perfect ‘after Thanksgiving dinner – in front of the fire – feet up on the ottoman – remote control in hand – football game on the TV' beer. Hey, I think I have my holiday plans set!
A six-pack might be a little pricey. I paid $2.89 for a 22-ounce bottle. But in this case, it may be money well spent.
