idono's Full Review: Red Hat Linux Personal 7.3 Full Version for Unix (...
Red Hat Linux, the most well-known linux distribution in the United States is still the most well-known. It is also one of the best Linux Distributions in the US. It has a very nice system, and is one of the most easiest linux distributions to install yet.
Before I get into the review, let me introduce you to a little bit of Linux Terminolgy. Linux is an Operating System(OS) just like "Microsoft Windows" or "Mac OS." Linux runs on most PCs. There are several different kinds of Linux. These different kinds are known as "distributions" commonly abbreviated to "distro."
Amazing Distribution
Redhat 7.3, valhalla, is the largest Linux Distribution I have seen. There are eight CDs just in the personal edition. There are two application CDs, one for StarOffice software, one for Source Code, and another with more apps.
The Setup
Its time to see how easy this is to set-up. I set the CD in the CD-ROM drive, and boot up the CD. The setup program is graphical, and very easy to use. You first select partitions, hard drive information. Redhat's partition software no longer has "RAID" option, but you can do this using fdisk if you must. Next, you set up your Boot Loader program, which can be either LILO or GRUB. After it, the network configuration(pretty easy), and then a Firewall configuration, which is very nice for security. The Next few steps are Language Selection(good amount), Account Configuration, Authentication for Account, Package Selection(all sorts of Packs) and Display Configuration. After it installs the software packages you select on custom install, you get to configure the X windows system. It will let you select GNOME or KDE.
The System
The Linux kernel runs fine just as any other Linux distro probably would. Linux is a remarkably stable Operating System and Red Hat is basically all the same with other distributions on the stablitity level. It has the standard Linux security level, and it has many library goodies. Overall, the system is great and outdoes some distro's systems. The kernel is newer and is good for those who want to use PCMCIA or USB.
The Software
The Software, perhaps the most vast category in the space-eating of Redhat, is well done for RedHat. It Includes many softwares such as: Star Office, Adobe Acrobat, Stuffit. System softwares like glibc, Xfree86, KDE, GNOME, emacs, ghostscript, BIND, sendmail, MySQL, PHP, Apache, and GCC.
It includes the Netscape, Konquerer, Nautalis, Mozilla, On the productivity end, it includes abiword, GNUmeric, and K office.
The Conclusion
Time to upgrade? If you are using 7.2, no, not really. There wont be must for you. If you are using before 7.0, its time to upgrade! Testing Linux out? Red Hat is one of the most well-known distros, so try this one to get a little bit of each flavour. Use another distro? Depending on whether you are a die-hard fan of your current distro, switching to Red Hat probably is a good idea. RedHat is an overall great Linux system to use and I recommend it.
