| bmcnichol's Full Review: Pokemon Yahtzee Jr. |
My son was a huge Pokemon fan. And I, of course, went overboard with buying him Pokemon paraphernalia. I found Pokemon Yahtzee Jr. on sale at Target and snatched it up. I love Yahtzee. My son had Mickey’s Yahtzee but this was Pokemon. He had to have this version too.
Out of the box the game comes with a large cardboard score board, a blue dice cup, 20 cardboard tokens, 5 yellow dice and stickers for the dice.
Before playing for the first time you will need to punch out the 20 tokens and place the stickers on the dice. There are six different Pokemon stickers. You will use one sticker on each dice. The six Pokemon are Gengar, Eevee, Snorlax, Meowth, Pikachu and Mewtwo.
The object of the game is to score the most points by rolling as many of the same Pokemon as you can.
To begin play, each player picks 5 tokens of the same color. Put the dice in the dice cup. The first player begins by rolling all five dice. Set aside any like Pokemon. If you don’t have any like Pokemon you can leave a die or roll all the dice again. You can pick up and roll as many of the dice again as you like. You can also change which Pokemon you are saving from roll to roll. You only get three rolls to get the most of the same Pokemon.
The game board is setup that the numbers 0-5 are at the top and along the sides are pictures of each Pokemon. Once you have rolled three times, count the amount of the same Pokemon you have. Let’s say you rolled three Gengar and two Eevees. You could put a token on either the three Gengar or the two Eevees. Once you place a token on the game board, it can not be moved. You can only have one token per space.
Pikachu is a wild card. If you roll a Pikachu, you can use that as any character. As in regular Yahtzee, if five of the same characters are rolled, it is Yahtzee.
If two people are playing, each player will go five times. With three players, four times and with four players, three times.
After everyone has completed all their turns, the players should add up the numbers above each of the tokens. The player with the highest score wins.
Pokemon Yahtzee Jr. is recommended for children four and older. It requires one to four players to play. If playing solo, the one person has five tries to roll the dice three times each to get the highest numbers. Each time, try and beat your best score.
My son loved Pokemon Yahtzee for no other reason then it was Pokemon. He knew all the Pokemon by name and had to help mom play the game.
Mom on the other hand has a slightly different opinion about the game. Yes it was cute because it was Pokemon but it was cheaply made. The cardboard game board started falling apart after a bunch of games. Daddy glued it on a piece of wood so we could continue to play. This was nice but then it was hard to store. The tokens are also made of cardboard and can easily be lost or mutilated.
It did help my son with counting, addition and taking turns but other then that, there isn’t much educational value. It is a nice starter Yahtzee set for a young child that is unable to play regular Yahtzee.
Pokemon Yahtzee is a fast paced game so it does keep a younger child's attention. Mom would get tired of playing long before my son did. He could play game after game. He also enjoyed trying to beat his own score. He liked beating mom better but sometimes he had to play solo.
All in all, I think Pokemon Yahtzee Jr. is a fun game that could be better made. If you have a Pokemon fan in your home, I think they will love it. It is a game that the whole family can play together. It would also make a nice present for a boy or girl Pokemon fan. I roll you Pikachu.
