Pros: Eases the frizzies; smells wonderful.
Cons: The cap locks when you don't want it to.
The Bottom Line: I like this product and would buy it again. It smells great and smooths down my hair which is why I bought it. See review for animal testing info.

| jo.com's Full Review: Physique Contouring Lotion |
I got my hair cut (not short!) during December break when my 21-year old was home. When she saw my hair, she liked it but told me I needed a product to control the frizz. She likes Frizz-Ease but when I came here to look for a product one of my trusted reviewers panned it for a Redkin product. I thought about going to the mall to buy something from a specialty store, like a Redkin product, but winded up, as usual, in CVS. I must have spent 20 minutes reading every hair product to see which one might work. I am reviewing Physique Contouring Lotion I had 2 other products in my house both of which were old and neither one worked so I threw them away and figured I would start all over again. (One was a L’Oreal product.)
About the contouring lotion
•It comes in a 5–ounce plastic bottle that has silver over white as the design making it attractive looking. I do believe packaging draws my attention and I may be more apt to buy a product whose look I like.
•The writing and directions are in 3 languages. What languages are they? Well straight shape also says style droit and estilo liso. I know a bit of French and Spanish but to double check I looked the terms up at AltaVista translations. Estilo liso means smooth style in Spanish and style droit means style right in French. English, of course, is the main language.
•According to the website: http://www.folica.com/styling/phq_conlot.htm “The Contouring Lotion provides a thin protective barrier on the hair to reduce frizz. It then uses surface tension and capillary action to create the "magnetic-like" attractions between the hair fibers to smooth them together.”
•We are told on the bottle that it is gentle on color-treated, permed or relaxed hair. Since mine is color treated, this was important to me.
•We are told at the website that the product “smoothes the hair surface to reduce flyaways for the sleek, controlled styles you want.”
How to use Physique Contouring Lotion:
• We are told to pump a small amount into our hands, rub our palms together and apply evenly throughout damp or dry hair.
• As I said above there is a pump. I am usually critical of most pumps because they are difficult to travel with. This pump truly does lock in place. In fact it locks in place to a fault. I have found many times that when I pump the top it locks in place when I don’t want it to and then I have to unlock it. It isn’t a major problem and only takes a moment but it can be annoying. Eventually they’ll come up with a top that locks in place but only when you want it to!
What the product is like:
•It is a white cream that comes out in short squirts. Since my hair is on the longer side, I need about 4 squirts to feel that it is covering my hair. That isn’t a lot and this 5-ounce bottle will last a long time.
•I love the way it smells. It doesn’t smell like flowers, perfume or fruit, but it is very pleasant. It smells like many skin lotions I have used (Oil of Olay for example). Rubbing it into the palm of my hands makes it disappear immediately and leaves my hands feeling smooth. Basically this is what it does to my hair.
Other information:
•This product is made by Proctor and Gamble. Their website is on the bottle which is www.physique.com along with 3 different 1-800 numbers if you have questions. If you go to the website you will see that the words “select your country” are also in French. At this site you can request a free sample which I have done and used quite awhile ago. This isn’t a sample but a full-sized bottle.
•Physique has a guarantee that I would like to share with you:
“Physique's collections of shampoos, conditioners, styling products and styling sprays work together to allow you to create and keep your style for 20 hours. How? Physique Science adjusts the spaces between hair strands — expanding for gravity defying volume, contracting for virtually unwavering smoothness or adjusting to the natural curve of your hair for defined curls — and then holds for great style that lasts for 20 hours, guaranteed or your money back.
If you are not completely satisfied with our Physique products, please call us at 1-800-214-8960 to receive a full refund of the purchase price.”
•The website is really nice with tips, style news and frequently asked questions. One asks about children using the product and we are told that it is safe for children older than 6 months old. They recommend getting a doctor’s advice for babies.
•While reading the website I found out why it smells so great. Although it doesn’t smell fruity, this is what it says, “The watermelon and kiwi give this signature fragrance a naturalness without being sweet or sticky. The ozone gives it a crisp, clean freshness, and the Easter lily gives it a fresh, modern floral scent on top.”
The ingredients are:
Water, Phenyl Trimethicone, Dimethicone, Polyacrylamide, C13-14 Isoparaffin, Laureth-7, Polyquaternium-28, Propylene Glycol, Fragrance, Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Triethanolamine, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Copolymer, Disodium EDTA, Benzalkonium Chloride, Propylparaben.
Additional thoughts:
•I like this product although I can’t say that the smoothness lasts for 20 hours. I’m not even awake for 20 hours! What I find I do is put it in my hair after I shampoo and then blow it dry. I definitely notice that it is smoother and less fly away or frizzy than it was without the Physique Contouring Lotion. I also let me hair dry naturally much of the time. Either way the results are the same.
•I do, though, add more when my hair is dry if I am going out at night. If I put a lot in then I just use my electric styling brush which has heat to dry it while I style it. If I just add a little, then I comb it through and any frizziness that happened during the days goes away.
I am giving this product 4 stars. It works better than anything I have tried and at $7.49 it won't break the bank. It can be bought at any drugstore or discount department store.
Also I e-mailed the company asking about animal testing and have not heard from them. If I do I will add what they tell me to this review.
January 28, 2002 I received the following e-mail:
Thanks for contacting Procter & Gamble about product safety testing. I'm happy
to share some information about our program.
The finished formulations in our non-food and non-drug products are no longer tested on animals. We've been able to reach this milestone by working with other companies, universities, and respected animal rights groups to develop
non-animal alternatives and get these alternatives accepted by government agencies that review product safety.
Our investment of over $140 million in alternatives is a good one: the use of animals is avoided and alternatives usually cost less and take less time. Even when we come across a totally new ingredient or technology we're able, in most cases, to use existing safety information and non-animal tests to prove safety. If we come across a situation when even the most advanced alternatives available
can't prove the safety of a new ingredient, we may have to rely on a minimal amount of animal research to make sure the ingredient is safe for human use. In these rare times, we design the tests to minimize stress to the animals. All
animals are under the care of a veterinarian and our labs consistently exceed the standard of care set by the American Veterinary Association.
I appreciate your interest in this important issue. For additional information about product safety testing, alternatives progress, and government regulations,
