There is still mastery in moviemaking. P.S. I Love You is proof. In all honesty, it isn't what would be considered Academy Award material, but it is superb in so many ways. Let me explain...
The acting is second to none. I've never been impressed with Hilary Swank; I don't mean that in a bad way. She just never did anything I found extraordinary. This role, however, seemed to be tailor made for her. She hit all the cues perfectly and I truly believed she was Holly Kennedy. Lisa Kudrow departed from the Phoebe character masterfully by stepping into the shoes of a jaded, no nonsense woman. She did so well that at moments I found myself thinking, I'm not sure I like this woman. Harry Connick, Jr. gave a believable portrayal of a man searching for love only to be met with resistance at every turn. I hate to admit it, but he just didn't grab me the way he's done in the past. I think that's because the other two men are just so dang sexy. Gerard Butler and Jeffrey Dean Morgan did not disappoint one tiny bit.
Butler's recent roles have been very dramatic which required a serious portrayal; in this one we are blessed with a glimpse of his comedic timing and a unforgettable sexy dance. While Morgan didn't grace the screen for an extended amount of time, what we do get to see of him is more than expected. His character was so carefree; a definite departure from the world weary and bitter John Winchester from Supernatural and the weakened Denny Duquette of Gray's Anatomy. The twinkle in his eyes makes you wanna eat him up.
In my opinion, the director did a great job putting his interpretation on film and the cinematography, especially the outdoor shots of Ireland, made you feel part of the scene; it was unobtrusive. By the time I walked out of the theater, I had laughed and cried, felt anger and shock, and was completely satisfied.
Being satisfied came as a surprise to me. All through the film it was in the back of my mind that it wouldn't end the way I wanted it to. While that was ultimately true, it wasn't the disappointing cliche ending I expected.
