| k_lumsden13's Full Review: Pur Ultimate Faucet Mount Water Filter Fm4010l |
This is an excellent water filter. My husband and I picked this filter in 2001, after we'd moved into our own place. Our first was the older model (where you tip the whole unit to get water) and we were so impressed that we've stuck with the Pur Faucet Mounts ever since. We purchased THIS model two years ago, after moving into our 3rd apartment. Everyone always comments on how good the water tastes and I love the filter life. Price is great, too. Not exactly cheap, but it won't leave a hole in your pocket, either. Especially nice is that most of these models come with a couple filters. It removes harmful chemicals and we no longer feel like we're drinking pool water.
A couple of months ago, we moved into a different apartment. Same complex, different unit. After moving this model to our new place, it was looking kind of shabby. It can be a little difficult to put on some faucets. My husband usually has to use a pair of pliers and a lot of elbow grease to get a great, tight fit, but once it's on, it stays put. Well, we decided to purchase a new one again. We went with the chrome unit. Same filter, different look. And it works just as well as the two previous models we've owned.
I continue to be impressed with the filter life of these things. We just filled a 29 gallon fish tank TWICE and it only used about 40% of the filter. With regular use, our filters usually last about 3-4 months.
The only gripe I have about these models is that they don't come with the sprayer nozzle attachment that our first one did. I used to love that thing. When we replaced that mount with this model, my husband (lovely man that he is) put that same sprayer on. We couldn't keep it any longer, however, as it was getting really shabby looking...and it doesn't match the new chrome mount. If I ever find a sprayer attachment for the chrome unit, I'm going to grab it.
One product description I saw for these filters states that "It reduces chemicals that are linked to increased cancer risk, lead, and 99.9% of microbiological cysts cryptosporidium and giardia while leaving beneficial fluoride in the water."
This design is superior over the previous one simply because it leaves you with a bit more room in your sink. With the older units, filling up a pitcher in my sink was a little difficult. With this mount, it's not a problem at all.
For those of you wondering when to change your filter, there is an alert bar on the top of the unit with a progress bar. This bar slowly creeps along as you use water. Once the red appears, you may think you're getting close, but not really. It's been our experience that the red will travel almost halfway across the bar before the filter is full. When that happens, the unit completely shuts off. So you can rest easy knowing you're not drinking poorly filtered water.
It IS a tad cumbersome, but no more than you'd expect it to be. You're sacrificing little space for great tasting water. That's a great deal in my book.
