| soothsayer's Full Review: Oxo 7"" Peeler and Paring Set |
Oxo, as you may know, is an award-winning range of kitchen tools designed with ergonomics in mind. After all, you do not want to strain your hand while you are (desperately) stroking your cucumber with a peeling device.
The Oxo vegetable peeler works. It peels, it is easy to handle, and fits comfortably in your hands. The peeler is designed for both left-and-right-handed use. The handle is padded with soft silicone rubber with the thumb and knuckle extra soft to reduce grip strain. The peeler is also lightweight being made entirely of plastic except for the metal alloy cutting blades.
The downside of this vegetable peeler is that it is hard to clean; gunk can build up in the hard to reach area located behind the blade. While you are peeling, peels can get stuck behind the blade and that is a bitch. I prefer a simple metal peeler since they do not have any weird plastic arches in the back. The Oxo peeler can be washed by hand, or safely washed in a dishwasher. The peeler can be broken if you are careless.
The paring knife that comes with it is so-so. Paring knifes are designed to be held in a certain way. I, accustomed to regular knives, found it a distraction to use. Those with ergonomic issues will probably find the paring knife a godsend.
There is also a big tapered hole through the handle allowing shaky hands to more easily hang up the peeler after use.
