Our county has a really neat program they started a few years ago - they started offering free books to parents as they went in for their baby and child's routine wellness and baby visits. It started with picture and board books, and then grew to offering themed and character books as the child grew to toddler age. The entire children's clinic really promotes reading to children daily from the moment they are born.
As a teacher and a parent of 3, I thought this was an outstanding idea. Though we have many books at the house for our children, I recognized quickly that many families do not. I never really picked up the books available because I felt our family could afford to purchase our own, and I would leave the free books for the families in greater need. After beginning the program by just having the books free to take, the doctors themselves have started handing a book to each and every parent as they give them their check up information.
So we've accumulated a lot of free books since I have 3 children all going to the same clinic! One of the very first books they gave my infant daughter was David Shannon - Oops!. As you know, board books are very durable and a safe way to introduce reading to very small children. It can be harder to find a wide variety of board books in the stores, and I hadn't heard of this one.
Turns out David Shannon - Oops! is part of a series of board books by author David Shannon. Other books include "Oh, David!", "No, David!", "David Goes to School", and "David in Trouble". They are listed as national bestsellers, and all feature a growing infant and toddler named David. David can often be seen wearing his familiar diaper (in the infant scened books) or striped shirt and red pants (in his toddler books).
The cover of the book shows David seated in a high chair with a large red mess on the ground. Each subsequent opened page shows a scene (that goes across the length of both opened pages) of David as he grows.
"David's first words were ..." begins the first page, and then on each page is the word, the scene including the object named, and a scribbled writing of David's reaction. For example, the first page says "Ball" in typical font above a picture of a ball ... but the whole scene shows the ball was thrown through a now broken window David is now peeking out of and the words "Uh-oh!" as if a child would have written them. The remaining pages contains scenes with: a dog, a ride on toy, eating, bathing, and sleeping on Mama.
I read David Shannon - Oops! often to my now 1 year old daughter. She attends to the book fine, but takes no special interest in it other than I feel the time we spend together. It id helping her to learn to attend to objects and turn pages. My 2 1/2 year old daughter though loves this book! Even in the earlier part of her 2 year old years, when she was developing language and vocabulary and making connections, she would pull out this book and ask to read it. She loved that she knew all of the pictures and what they meant. As she's grown over this year she tells a story or sentence about David on each page. "Ut-oh Mommy David broke the window!" and etc ...
I love the colorful, hand drawn pictures. I love that the lines are purposely blurred at times and not precise. I love that the colors are mixed and each page is uniquely different, and yet contains a similar theme in character and font.
David Shannon - Oops! is a happy, fun, easy to read book with your very young children.
