Pros: SPF 20, comes in many colors
Cons: Settles into creases & fine lines, requires ALOT of blending
The Bottom Line: The Cream Powder Makeup is hard to blend and looks unnatural. Neutrogena's make up is a disappointment!

I am now in my very early 30s, and my skin is beginning to show it! I usually wear only powder during the day (except when I have had a long night or my skin seems more uneven than usual), but now I find myself at times needing a little more coverage than in the past, so I have decided that I need a good, reliable foundation. I need a foundation that goes on and blends quickly and smoothly because I have no patience for complicated makeup, is for fair skin but has a slightly yellow undertones to counteract the redness in my face, and doesn’t settle in my wrinkles and creases. In the past, I have used Maybelline True Illusion Foundation/Powder in One, Maybelline Express Makeup 3 in 1, Revlon Age Defying Powder, Max Factor Liquid, and Max Factor Powdered Foundation. Some of these were better than others, but non warranted a repeat purchase except for the Max Factor Powdered Foundation which is an opaque pressed powder that gives pretty good coverage that I really like. I just want a real foundation to have on hand for when I need a little more coverage.
Before heading to the department store to try a more expensive brand, I gave drugstore makeup one more try, and purchased Neutrogena Healthy Skin Cream Powder Makeup for $9.99, which is on the high end of drugstore makeup. I have never used Neutrogena makeup, but I use and love many other Neutrogena skin care products including their Hand Cream, Lip Moisture, Anti-wrinkle Cream, Bronzing Face Self Tanner, and Deep Clean Facial Cleanser, so I thought that their fairly new makeup line was worth a try. The foundations and powders come in a variety of formulas. Both the Skin Clearing (for acne prone skin) and the Healthy Skin (improves condition of skin) lines come in liquid, powder, and cream powder formulas. They have a wide variety of colors to choose from and although you can’t test makeup at the drugstore, the Neutrogena display does a good job explaining how to choose the best color for your skin. I chose Fresh Vanilla, which has yellowish undertones, was the lightest shade available.
I tried my new makeup right away, and wasn’t impressed. The color was just OK, and I didn’t like how it went on. Even though this was the lightest color, it looked obvious (a little dark, if you can believe that) and artificial on my skin. Using the applicator sponge that was included in the compact, I dabbed in into the cream makeup and then spread it onto my skin. Surprisingly, this makeup was very difficult to blend. It seemed to be easier to blend with my finger, which probably doesn’t seem like a big deal, but being that this product is in a compact, I thought it should be quite portable and I would have liked the convenience of using the sponge to apply it when I am on the go. Once it was blended in, the appearance of this matte finish makeup was acceptable. I didn’t feel the need for power to “set” the makeup, it did the job that cream powders are supposed to do–work as foundation and powder in one. After 15 minutes however, I noticed that the makeup had noticeably caked up in the creases around my mouth and eyes making my skin look dry and OLDER! I was so disappointed! Once again I had to blend with my fingers. This is just too much maintenance for me! After one or two touch ups it seemed fine for the rest of the day, although I still had some caking and creasing in my fine lines and wrinkles (which are not THAT bad, but look terrible with this product on my face). The Neutrogena Healthy Skin makeup line also claims to improve the appearance of your skin with noticeable results after two weeks. I tried my best to use this product daily for two weeks to see if it at least lived up to that claim, but I gave up after just five days. I noticed no improvement in my skin in that time and I just could not handle all that constant blending!
O.K. Here are a couple positive features of this makeup: It is oil free, it has an SPF of 20, and it contains hydroxy acids and vitamins that claim to improve the skin.
This makeup might work great for someone else, since everyone’s skin is different, but my Neutrogena Healthy Skin Cream Powder Makeup went right in the trash. I will be heading to the department store ($10 poorer) after all.
