The Bottom Line: My First Truck Board Book is a must have for the truck-lover in your family! This book is an excellent introduction to many different types of trucks.

My 16 month old son is a certified truck fanatic! We recently took a trip to visit my family and for 700 miles, he pointed out almost every truck that passed us on the highway. If he was getting fussy in his car seat, all we had to say was, "Jake, where is the truck?" and he would stop crying and start looking. Recently at a trip to Barnes and Noble, I noticed My First Truck Board Book sitting on the shelf with the other books in the My First Board Book series. I eagerly grabbed the book and showed it to my son. I was surprised that he only seemed mildly interested in the book. I chalked it up to the fact that the pictures were real-life pictures and not cartoon pictures like his other truck books. We skipped the book that day and went home empty-handed. Recently my husband made a trip to the mall by himself and came home with presents for everyone. The new Candace Bushnell book for me, the Ray Romano book for him (epinions to follow!) and My First Truck Board Book for Jake. I told him about my unsuccessful attempt to get him interested in the book, but we decided to keep it since we thought he might be interested later. Well, it must be later! Suddenly Jake has a new favorite book. He was sitting with my father looking at books and after flipping through the truck book at least twice, I tried to take it away and give him a new book. Jake would have none of that!! He held on with a death grip and squealed as I tried to take it away! I let him keep it and he was happy to just peruse the book and look at all the wonderful trucks. Are you a little curious about the book that has become an instant hit in our house? Let me share some information so you can see if this book is right for the truck-lover in your family.
Trucks, Trucks, and MORE TRUCKS!
My First Truck Board Book is a genuine truck bonanza! This book includes every type of truck imaginable. Each set of 2 pages is dedicated to a certain class of truck, with quite a few examples on each page. The classes of trucks in the book include: busy trucks, carriers, giant carriers, fire trucks, fire emergency vehicles, road builders, loaders and lifters, dump trucks, diggers, mighty trucks, little trucks, farm machines, and tractor attachments. All of the trucks are real life pictures, some of the trucks are shown in the process of doing what they are designed to do and others are shown at rest. Each truck has its proper name listed near it. This was particularly helpful to me as I was unfamiliar with many of the trucks in the book.
The last 6 pages in the book are interactive matching games. In the first two games, you get to match the wheels and accessories to the trucks they belong to. The pictures you are trying to match are taken directly from the trucks you are trying to match to, so the games are not too difficult. The last matching game is a bit more difficult; you have to match the truck to the child who is dressed for the type of job it is used for. This requires more complex problem-solving skills. My son is not quite ready for these games; however, in time he will develop the skills necessary for these activities. Until then, he is certainly interested in looking at the wheels and the people who use these trucks. With that in mind, I think these pages are useful and appropriate for this book.
My First Truck Board Book is just the right size for little hands. Six inches tall and almost five inches wide, the thick pages are easy for small fingers to turn. There are plenty of trucks to keep any child happy within the 36 pages of this book. At 16 months, my son does not know what most of these trucks are for, but he doesn’t care. He loves to look through the pages and simply enjoy the pictures. I am sure that My First Truck Board Book will be enjoyed for many years to come as Jake learns the names of each truck and what they are used for. If there is a truck-lover in your family, this book is a must have for your library!
