A Dry Yellow Highlighter That Works!

I like trying new office supplies. So when the Tombow Mono Dry Highlighter in Fluorescent Yellow came my way … I said "mine!" I couldn’t wait to experiment and see how it compared to a conventional highlighter.
Description
Unlike a traditional highlighter, this is dry highlighter tape that is in a plastic dispenser similar to a dispenser for white correction tape. The dispenser is curved and about 3 1/4” long x 1 3/8” at its widest area. The clear plastic allows visibility of the highlighter tape (to see when it is running out) as well as all the gears that make the item work. A recessed knob, resembling a screw head, allows one to adjust the tension of the highlighter tape.
This highlighter tape measures 1/6” x 236” and is acid-free. Tombow claims the highlighter tape is erasable using a standard pencil eraser. The dispenser is not refillable.
My Experiences
The plastic dispenser is easy to hold and comfortable. Just like a correction tape dispenser, the yellow highlighter tape feeds over a tip so that it can be precisely applied to paper. Just press the tip of the dispenser against the paper and pull the dispenser to the side so that the highlighter covers the page. A right- or left-handed person can use this product.
I primarily use this highlighter on 20-pound white copier or laser paper and sometimes on lined white paper tablet sheets. The fluorescent yellow color is easy to see against the white paper. Sometimes the highlighter doesn’t instantly apply … it skips about a 1/16” before grabbing onto the page. There are also times when the yellow highlighter doesn’t instantly stick, but running my finger along it adheres it to the page. No color transfers to my hand.
I have used this highlighter to cover ballpoint pen as well as printing from copiers, fax machines and laser printers. One thing that bothers me a little bit is that I notice the writing I highlight “fades out” as the highlighter is applied. I can still read the writing without problem. If I wish, I can also apply the highlighter to the page and then write over it.
This highlighter tape can also be applied over itself, overlapping lines. The overlapped lines are only noticeable if I look closely at the page. Otherwise, the swath of yellow looks like it was generated from a broad tip highlighter.
The biggest “pro” to this tape is that I can erase it! It’s frustrating to highlight something in a bright neon color only to find you marked the wrong item on the page. With this Tombow Dry Highlighter, I just take a pencil eraser to remove any portion of the highlighter. The erasers I’ve been using are on the Pentel EZ2 mechanical pencil or the eraser on a regular #2 wooden pencil. Of course, the longer the highlighter tape sits on the page, the more erasing is needed to remove the highlighter.
Another nice feature is that the highlighter does not bleed through the page. With liquid highlighters, I can often see a yellow shadow of the highlighter on the back side of the paper. No so with this highlighter.
If you need a portable highlighter, this product is dry so it won’t leak. It is also lightweight and easy to drop into a pocket, tote or bag.

This highlighter tape was purchased at Staples for $2.87 each.
Summary
Tombow Mono Dry Highlighter in Fluorescent Yellow has its pros and cons, but for me the pros far outweigh the negatives. I love that I can erase the highlighter. That’s a huge bonus. I just wish the highlighter didn’t fade the text it covers. I recommend giving this product a try … especially if you need to erase highlighter marks!
