Pros: VBA code used throughout the suite.
Redistributable Access runtime and MSDE.
Cons: Too expensive if not used for Access application development.
The Bottom Line: Microsoft Access is a great database product for the beginner and is deep enough to support the professional. The other Office products compliment Access extremely well.

I was given a project at work which was specified to run on Microsoft Access. It would be a data-entry database shared by about a dozen users.
I started using Office '97 Professional. I found Access to be very friendly to the application programmer. It's visual tools encourage prototyping. The bound controls and QBE (query by example) get you running quickly. The VBA and SQL code editors give you plenty of room to extend your designs.
Once we had a prototype near ready for distribution, we began discussing versionitis. We had various versions of Office on the network, some without Access at all. After reading about the distributable Access runtime in the Developer Edition, I asked for one copy for myself to solve the problem.
The version we got in was 2000. It had more programming goodies like ADO (in addition to DAO) and Access Projects that use SQL Server or the redistributable MSDE (Microsoft Data Engine - SQL Server Jr).
The Access runtime solved the versionitis. We installed probably two dozen users. The project was a complete success. We have been using the application for three years.
If I had to do it again, I'd probably use fewer bound controls and more temporary tables to decrease network traffic. As it is, it is slow at some tasks.
While working on this project, I became a fan of Excel and Word. Excel really shines in table creation and manipulation as well as formatting printouts. One report that I couldn't seem to get to work in Access was accomplished with Excel. Word is extremely flexible when you get past the learning curve. I was able to format source files and print them with great precision.
You'll also get FrontPage, Publisher and PhotoDraw. All these are strong programs I was able to use without much study.
