I keep telling aspiring guitar players that if they want to get a great rock sound, they should buy a Marshall 100 watt half-stack. I'm the proud owner of a '75 100 watt Marshall, with a full stack of cabinets (one bottom cab, one slanted top cab.) This was the best musical investment I've ever made. Not only does my Marshall deliver the best rock sound allowed by law, but it has proven to be very reliable as well.
Let's talk about how a Marshall sounds... Here are the words that come to mind: sweet, warm, powerful, loud, loud, and LOUD! Seriously, the Marshall amp is the best for playing rock music, especially if overdriven power chords are part of your sound. It's a great amp for rock, heavy metal, grunge, what have you. If you play country or jazz guitar, you may be better off with a smaller Fender amp or such. But if you want a BIG BIG rockin' sound, loud enough to rock out an auditorium - get your hands on a Marshall.
Let's talk reliability. I've had my vintage head now for ten years, and it's the most reliable piece of gear I've ever owned. I've used it to play in several bands, and have lugged it around to practices, gigs, etc. This thing is a tank! A couple times my head has taken a spill off the cabinet onto the floor without breaking. It is virtually indestructable! I've only had to replace the power tubes once in ten years! The Marshall is a workhorse amplifier, built for the serious rock guitarist.
Here's how I set up my Marshall for maximum ROCK -- I set the bass, treble, and presence knobs on 5, and I set the pre-amp knob on 10 (for maximum overdrive). Setting the master gain on 2 is usually more than enough volume for practicing, recording, or playing a gig where the cabs are miked. I usually just play a half-stack setup , but when I use the full stack, setting the amp on 2 blows the doors off! Yeah, baby, yeah!
I also use a distortion pedal with my set-up for added power, and let me tell you it simply RIPS! No amp out there can compare with the mighty Marshall when it comes to power chords. All you've got to do is turn up the amp a little bit, bang out a power chord, and sweet mamma let freedom ring!!! This is the sound of ROCK! Of course, if you're going for a clean sound you can turn down the pre-amp, and you'll get a nice, bright clean sound that is still warm and full of sparkle.
I really hate to see good guitar players waste their money on cheap amps. If you play rock style music, and you're serious about getting a great sound - get a Marshall and you can't go wrong. It's what the pros use. Paul Blow wouldn't steer you wrong...
