| goldjay's Full Review: Manischewitz Pancake Syrup Kosher For Passover 24o... |
Every year, just before the Jewish holiday of Passover starts, I stock up on foods that I will use during the holiday. There are many foods that cannot be eaten on this special Spring holiday and any food that contains any corn product, including corn syrup, is not permitted. This is because corn is a grain and other than the wheat flour in matzah, grains are not allowed on Passover.
So, this year when I was doing my Passover shopping, I added a bottle of pancake syrup to my shopping cart. It was Manischewitz Pancake Syrup because that is the brand in the aisle that was kosher for Passover. You might wonder why Id need pancake syrup when I cant make pancakes but I have found several uses for it.
Details
First of all, the syrup comes in a 24 ounce bottle. The bottle has a red top with a flip top and a squeeze hole in it. The bottle has a brown liquid that appears to be quite thin while still in the bottle. When it is poured out, it still seems quite thin. You can smell the maple flavor when it is poured.
This syrup tastes pretty much like many others Ive tasted over the years. Id have to equate it to most supermarket brands of syrup. It is a bit thinner than some but it is good tasting. It has no real maple syrup in this bottle but it does have a maple flavor. .
Ingredients and Nutrition
According to the back of this bottle, the ingredients in this bottle are:
sugar syrup, water, caramel color, cellulose gum, potassium sorbate, natural and artificial flavors, salt, citric acid, sodium benzoate.
Nationally, this product is not so great for you. It is syrup, after all. However, used in moderation, its not terrible either. Each serving of one quarter of a cup contains 210 calories. Of this, there is no fat, no protein and 53 grams of carbohydrates. There are no significant vitamins nor minerals.
Uses for Pancake Syrup on Passover
There are a few recipes that I use Pancake Syrup in on Passover. First of all, I have a recipe to make Passover Pancakes using Matzah Meal. Since they do not taste that great, not like real pancakes, using the pancake syrup does help them to taste better. I, personally, wont even eat them, but my kids will. My daughter also likes to mix a tablespoon or two of this syrup into plain yogurt to give it a bit of sweetness and flavor. When she mixes it all up, it actually tastes pretty good even though it sounds really funny!
I use this syrup when I make Matzah Brie which is basically a fried matzah. After soaking the matzah in water to make it soggy, one fries it in butter and an egg mixture. After it is cooked, I add some of this pancake syrup to give it a little bit of a sweet flavor. It can sort of be compared to a French Toast but French Toast is much better.
I also use this syrup in my recipe for Maple Salmon. Even though this syrup technically is does not even have maple in it, it does have the same flavor and works well on my fish. I mix some of the syrup with some spices and soy sauce and I marinate my salmon filets in it and then bake or grill it. It comes out quite tasty.
My Thoughts
Though this syrup is thinner than others I use every day, it still has a good flavor and taste to it. It works well in my recipes and it tastes good on my matzah brie. My kids like it and, on Passover, anything I can get them to eat is good. (Both of my kids are picky and have a hard time finding foods they like on Passover)
Recommendations
I would have to recommend this as a good syrup for use on Passover. Since there are not a whole lot of choices in my area, I have not seen any others to compare it to. It tastes good and makes other foods taste good too. I personally use it several times during the eight days of Passover.
