If you ever have to get a birthday gift for me, the best choice is jewelry. I love things that sparkle and shine. I may not have more room for another necklace, ring, or bracelet; that's still my favorite present. If, however, cost is an issue, your best bet is to buy me a Mead Composition Book. My preference is for the traditional black and white marbled cover, although I must admit to liking the purple and white covers, too. Mead also makes them in blue and white, but those just don't do it for me the same way.
I love to write. For work purposes, I use a word processor. For creative writing and for journaling, however, I still start out longhand in a composition book with a good ballpoint or fountain pen. My favorite composition books, the only ones I will pay money for, are those by Mead.
Mead Composition books are the sturdiest I've come across. My journals get tossed around pretty well before I fill them up. They need to take abuse. Mead Composition Books do. The cover is a hard and dense cardboard with a finish that doesn't look any worse after a month or two of being beaten up. For those who use them for school purposes, they'll hold up to a semester of wear and tear. The front inner cover also includes a place for a class schedule. The back inner cover includes multiplication tables, weights and measures tables and a number of other charts.
The books are stitched. No perforated pages. The pages stay in. I've been known to cut out a page, but they will not tear without putting forth effort. I've never simply "lost" a page. When I taught English, I had students do homework in these books. They're all the same size. There is no "losing an assignment."
Mead puts 100 pages in its Composition books. Most other companies only have 80 pages in their composition books. While Mead often costs a little more, I get 25% more pages than from other companies.
The pages of the Mead Composition Book measure only 7.5 x 9.34. This makes a great size for me to carry in a purse. I love legal pads for playwrighting. I can see a whole page of dialogue and get the feel of how things move. I love 8.5x 11 for letter writing. For keeping a journal, I love the convenience of something that can slip in a purse. (Yes, I carry big purses.)
I've found Mead Composition Books for prices ranging from $1.50 to $1.99. They do occasionally come on sale, and there are times when I can find them in bulk for as little as 99 cents a piece. I jump on those opportunities. Mead Composition Books don't go bad. They will wait for me to be ready for them.
I can't recommend Mead Compostion Books strongly enough. They're great for students. They're ideal in the workplace. They're great for journals, to-do lists, and just about any other task that requires writing. They just don't get better than this.
